I picked up a used 1858 reproduction carbine and I'm trying to determine if its a Pietta or Uberti?

It looks like the pictures of the 1858 repro. carbine that Cabella's sells but I received no paperwork or anything with it. I bought it "as is" from an auction w/ 4 extra cylinders. I thought that maybe I'd look into BP shooting and I think these carbines look great. I already know NOT to put my left hand in front of the cylinder when firing it but, its pretty light and well balanced and with the extra brass curl underneath its easy to hold and sight.

There aren't any manufacturer names stamped on it.

It has a serial number on the tang A23XXX
and some marks on the right side of the frame and barrel

On the frame there is a square box with BP inside and next to that PN with some kind of symbol above it then another square box with a symbol inside

The barrel has the square box with a symbol inside (hard to read) and then the PN with a symbol above.

The symbol above the PN looks like a circular ring of fire if that helps.

I'm guessing the BP means black powder the PN - maybe Pietta? or Part Number or maybe something I've never thought of?

Another question, do Pietta and Uberti index differently?

I have read where you can get 45 colt cylinders and shoot low power cowboy action ammo? They have different cylinders for Uberti and Pietta so I figuredd smething must be different.

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated! I've been reading the threads on loading and cleaning and the people on the BP threads really seem to know their stuff. Hopefully one of you can tell me what I have.

The BP in the box is the date it was proofed in Italy the proof marks are the other symbols(Gardone, Italy proof house. Beretta has a website that shows the dates according to the symbols. BP is newer than one of my Pietta's which is BN(2000). Pietta S/N begin with R on their Remingtons, don't know about Uberti.

As to the MFR. I don't know if both Pietta and Uberti built the carbine. I have a 10 year old '58 Rem Carbine coming that has never been fired and believe it is an Uberti because a Pietta cylinder would not fit it.

Can you tell me if at the breech end of the bbl. the frame is scooped out to reveal 3 threads or is it flat, that'll give me and idea of a possible third Mfr.
Is there no other names on it, like Navy Arms?

Both index the same way but the Pietta has a longer cylinder and will not fit the Uberti, Cyl.is bigger in Dia too I believe. Pietta is a bit larger frame than Uberti also.

From the S/N I believe you have an Uberti, but I'm not certain sure.

The BP date code is for 2001. These were all made by Uberti- Pietta hasn't made a Rem carbine (yet).

I have one that I recently bought from Cabela's and am dying to shoot! i can't wait until Spring!

The one I got coming is 10 years or so old. I'll check the letters in the box when it gets here.
I traded my McClelland saddle for it. It has never been fired. It has been made to look like the very first Rem. Carbine model with a forestock because these models are 1866 or so and was too late a period for the Fla. Cav Unit of the Civil War they Re-enact(ed). Been sitting in a gun cabinet since the stock was put on it. I can't wait to see it. if this is done as well as the other things the Major makes, then it'll be topnotch. :what:

I have always wanted one of these, even though I can't shoot it is a SASS match. (Didn't know that, but do now.) I did come from Cabela's many moon ago.

I'm sure you'll love it Dragoon. Then again, it's hard not to love anything Remington related!

I will eventually get an R&D conversion cylinder for it too- There were cartridge conversions made of these back in the day. Not that I'd need it, but I'd like to replace the buckhorn rear sight with a ladder sight, just for looks (like the real ones had).

Let us know when you get it Dragoon; I'm very curious as to what it looks like with the forestock!

PUMP Shotguns and ya can't have a Remmie carbine?!?!?!? PUMP-Rifles and ya can't?!?!?

Thought i maight try sass, but seems its gamesmanned&ruled to death!

Rules state ...Any lever or slide action...rifle.
Yeah ManyIrons I feel the same way. I don't shoot to compete(other than with myself) so I'll shoot it in my local CAS matches if they let me. With two cylinders.

SASS will soon be only the Gamers. So Sad. I haven't joined SASS yet and from all the hoorah I'm reading I don't need to pay a membership fee to be a customer.

I`m a sass member , but enjoy shooting more at my local black powder club , where we test and shoot bp .and have competions in each and any catagory . sass isn`t useing the carbines because they want rifles to hold 10 shots . and the carbines would be stuck with only 5 safely ..although i did read that they were thinking about the carbines for mounted shooting .. it is a great 1 handed rifle .

Quit IPSC about a million years back, damn! Minute some damn money hits a sport and goes straight to hell! I don't do this for money, its all about the fun!

OK...It is am Uberti...Thanks to Old Dragoon his suggestion caused me to look at the Carbine differently.

I checked the Frame like Old Dragoon suggested and I found the manufacturer name!

It is on the underide of the barrel under the loading lever but you have to have the level in the down position wnd then look under the barrel.

I always had the loading level up and latched in place - in this position the loading lever covers the name.

It states CAL. 44 BLACK POWDER ONLY-A.UBERTIITALY

I looked at this gun 100 times and never thought to look UNDER the loading lever.
