Hey all,

A little while back I posted on here about a 1903 RIA Springfield I picked up locally for $40. I threw on a Williams 5D/03 peep sight (it was D&T for a Lyman or Redfield, but the Williams fit just the same) and went to the range with it.

To my surprise, the first group at 100yds measured only 1.3" across :D (with Hornady 165gr BTSP). Unfortunately, after 4 rounds of 180gr Winchester Super X the front action screw sheared :uhoh:

Was this because of the heavier ammo being used? Or just a result of old parts? Maybe I had it torqued too much, although I doubt it since I didn't torque them anymore than I would screws on a 96 year-old firearm ;)

Lastly, is there anywhere I can get modern action screws for this thing? SS screws would be nice so I can be sure this wont happen again. Although I think that maybe the screws were designed to be more of a "sacrificial" part so that worse damage doesn't occur.

Thanks,

- TNG

The front action screw probably sheared due to being incorrectly assembled or too much strain on it at some time in the past. You don't need SS screws. New screws can be had from Gunpartscorp. Be sure the metal tube that separates the trigger guard from the action is installed in the stock. '03s are great rifles. Enjoy!

If it sheared that screw, the action is likely moving too much and the screw is taking the brunt of the recoil. Without the action screwed in place, can you move it back and forth in the stock?
