Hey all,
A little while back I posted on here about a 1903 RIA Springfield I picked up locally for $40. I threw on a Williams 5D/03 peep sight (it was D&T for a Lyman or Redfield, but the Williams fit just the same) and went to the range with it.
To my surprise, the first group at 100yds measured only 1.3" across (with Hornady 165gr BTSP). Unfortunately, after 4 rounds of 180gr Winchester Super X the front action screw sheared
Was this because of the heavier ammo being used? Or just a result of old parts? Maybe I had it torqued too much, although I doubt it since I didn't torque them anymore than I would screws on a 96 year-old firearm
Lastly, is there anywhere I can get modern action screws for this thing? SS screws would be nice so I can be sure this wont happen again. Although I think that maybe the screws were designed to be more of a "sacrificial" part so that worse damage doesn't occur.
Thanks,
- TNG
