1911 for carry 45 or 10mm? Tell me why...

Still contemplating the new Colt Delta Elites to arrive...?

I currently have a few 1911's in 45 and carry a Springfield TRP now.

I was thinking of another 1911 because all the same holsters etc. will fit it. I would have to stock up on new mags right?

I am very interested in the caliber and do reload. I know there is a decent amount of commercial stuff for it now.

I've even thought about a 38 Casull, 400 Corbon and the elusive 40 Super.

Already shooting a 45 Super and 460 Rowland in one of my 1911's I like the power but commercial stuff is obviously hard to find and expensive at that. Not that it's a huge problem just annoying.

I worry about the reliability of feeding and pounding on the frame with the other calibers. There is not much info on them.

So with everything that I already have, what would be the point of getting a 10mm in lieu of something else? Sell me!

I'm also considering a .400 Corbon, but as a hunting sidearm, not for carry. I like the idea, but not enough to hang my life on it.

The reason to consider a 10mm is that all handgun cartridges are underpowered for SD, and you should use the most powerful one you can handle. The 10mm is the clear muzzle energy winner.

So, the obvious question is, if it's so fantastic, why isn't everyone carrying it? Guys who like 10mms will swarm in and defend it, but the end of the story is always the same. Man up and learn to handle the recoil on full-house loads, or just use a .40 instead. So, the questions that stays with you is, can you seriously manage the power, or learn to? I only shot one 10mm, and I later found out it was a medium-hot load, not full-house, and it was more than I enjoyed. If you want full-house ammo, you are going to be rolling your own or ordering it.

When I carry .45 ACP, I don't ever feel for one second I would be better off with a 10mm.

I've enjoyed shooting my 10mm launcher for many years. The cartridge is pretty versatile in you can have loading from quite mild to very wild. Additionally, in my situation the conversion capability to shoot 10mm short ( a.k.a. 40 SW using a properly chambered barrel ) out of the same platform is pretty handy.

I would think for your carry purpose the principle advantage for the 10mm is that you can get more capacity for a comparable size in 45 acp.

In the Glock patterns the 20 and 21 share the same frame. The 20 has a magazine capacity of 16 while the 21 has a magazine capacity of 13. You'll find in the single stack 1911 patterns the 10mm will hold more cartridges using a flush fit magazine over the 45 acp chamberings.

A good friend of mine has one of the original Dan Wesson Pointman 7 in 10mm. It runs well with full power loads. The only issues have been with using the Winchester Silver tips in the sub sonic loading. Those have not been reliable in cycling his 1911 pattern. I suspect nothing wrong, just not what the gun was setup for.

I've enjoyed my 1cm launcher for all the casual pistols match and for serious in my desert recreational explorations. It is a very comforting round to have as a personal defense round.

I went to a Colt commander to a DE... at the time I was like "more is better" but really I don't think the bad guy is going to know the diffrence between a hot 45 and a 10mm. go with what ever you can control better.

If you're already familiar with the platform and haven't shot a 10mm pistol I would say "try It" worst case scenario is that it only puts holes in paper...

Why not get the .45 and a .400 Corbon barrel? You get the best of both worlds, and won't wear out your gun.
