What capacity magazines do you use in your compact (officer) size 1911 pistols?

I just purchased a Colt 1991A1 Compact Model (officer) primarily for concealed carry. It came with a 6 round colt magazine and a 7 round Kimber magazine but I’d like to get a few more good quality mags for it. I’m probably going to be getting mags from Wilson Combat but am unsure whether to get the traditional 6 round magazines or the newer 7 round magazines.

My father, who has been collecting and using 1911s for about 40 years, says that he would never use anything but a standard 6 round magazine in an officer size pistol because the newer larger capacity magazines are not as consistent, not as reliable, wear out faster, and have issues with failure to feed on the last round. He says that if he had a 7 round magazine he would only ever load 6 rounds in it anyway because of issues.

Now, I haven’t had any issues yet with the 7 round Kimber magazine and my own online reading has led me to come to the conclusion that the issues with higher capacity magazines are only really an issue when you purchase “cheap” magazines and don’t seem to apply to good quality mags like those made by Wilson Combat etc. It seems like the only time people in the online gun community report problems with the functioning of the higher capacity mags is when they’re using the cheaper generic mags while those using the high end mags do not have any issues.

If I have one magazine in the pistol and am carrying two extras the additional 3 rounds I would gain from having 7 round magazines would increase my overall stopping power by about 16% which could be a big deal in a self defense situation (although it can be argued that if I’m going through ALL my rounds there’s something seriously wrong :D ). However, if that extra 16% reduces the overall functional reliability of my firearm it certainly would NOT be worth it.

I’d really appreciate everyone’s feedback regarding the 6 round magazines vs the 7 round magazines in a compact officer size 1911 . . . . . what are your thoughts and experiences? Is my father right or are his conclusions based on old information?

Many Thanks,

I, too, am more confident in 6 round magazines for my OACP but I have not pushed hard on it.

I can say that my experience with 8 round GM magazines would at least let me give 7 shot OACP magazines a trial. The first sign of decline in an 8 round Wilson is that it quits lifting the slide stop. Feeding is still good, so you are not at great risk of malfunction in that first magazine load, just set up for a slower reload. Of course if you have more practice sessions than you do gunfights, you are likely to find the magazine spring needing replacement before an emergency situation arises.

I have five Metalform 38 Super magazines built with plastic Wilson followers. Standard capacity in a Gov't/Commander model is 9, the Wilson follower allowed 10.

After about 6,000 rounds the plastic followers became worn, and stopped locking the slide back reliably. I ditched all those plastic followers and replaced them with standard metal round followers. Yeah, I went back to 9, but I'm fine with that.

I'd do the same with an Officer's magazine.

I have a 70 series Colt Government Model that came with 7 round mag. It refuses to run with the 8 rounders, so I stick with original capacity mags.

I'd worry less about capacity, and more about getting quality mags. I run 8 round McCormick Power Mags in my full size guns, and they've been great. I've had guns that didn't like Wilson 47D mags though. McCormick also has their new Power Mag + follower that's aluminum frame safe.

Your original question is like asking "Is a Sedan or a Hatchback more reliable?" Well, if the sedan is a Toyota, and the hatchback is a Yugo, then the sedan is more reliable. If the sedan is a Yugo, and the hatchback is a Toyota, then the hatchback is more reliable.

I use standard Colt 6 round mags in my LWOM.The only problem I have is occasionally the slide will not lock back on the last shot, probably due to the high slide velocity on these short 1911s and the mag spring not being able to keep up.The gun however has always fed and extracted/ejected just fine.
