I am wanting to buy 8 new magazines for my 1911's. I want {welded, flush fit},flat bottom magazines. I am seeking opinions on the following mags;

A. Chip McCormick Classic Shooting Star 8 round with flat follower.

B. Brownells 7 or 8 round sold under Brownells label. (This is a new product for them. They don't say who is making them).

C. Mec-Gar (who makes OEM magazines for a lot of companies).

I don't have a preference between 7 or 8 rounds.

Now to respond in advance to questions;

1. Buy only Wilson or other high quality magazines.

Answer; I already own a bunch left over from my IPSC days.

2. You owe it to your 1911's to buy only the most expensive maagazines made. What's $ 280.00 for 8 Wilson magazines?

Answer; I like to eat every day.

3. Get them with bumper pads so you don't fumble your reloads when fighting a large criminal gang.

A. I already have a bunch with bumper pads and don't really care for them.

4. I have not read your question but whatever it is Get a Glock!

Answers....

It sounds like your mind is made up & you have your own answers.
FWIW; most serious gunners or armed professionals use either Wilson Combats, Tripp or Chip McCormick style 1911 pistol magazines.
10-8 Precision, Ed Brown, Kimber or some other brand may meet your needs too.
I don't own or carry any 1911s at this time, but if I did buy a new SAO format 1911a1 pistol, Id get a few new Wilson magazines.
I have this thing about walking & breathing. :D

Chip McCormick Classic Shooting Star 8 round with flat follower.

I use the power mags. I know it's not exactly what you're looking at (the shooting stars), but they may be close enough that my experience may have some transferrable info.

My LGS sells them for cheaper than I can buy form Midway once you factor in shipping, so I have bought several and love them. My Colt will feed anything from them (even empty cases).
I have a few stainless, and one blued one. The blued one, while I've never had a malfunction, somehow seems to be "stickier." Not sure why it would be, but it doesn't have the slick, low-friction feel of the stainless mags. I only use the blued one at the range, but the stainless ones, I'll carry anywhere, and I trust my life and that of my family with those mags.
I'll also add that it's nice that the CMC mags cost less than the Wilsons.

I have a Kimber that can be finicky about magazines. For instance, it doesn't like Wilson mags. It likes Chip McCormick mags - including the flat-bottomed Shooting Star ones. So there's one recommendation, I guess. Just be aware that the follower on those is metal and sharp-ish. If you have an aluminum frame, it may ding the frame upon loading the last round.

Also, your anticipatory questions and answers made me laugh. Well done!

There is nothing wrong with either A. B. or C. I own all three and they are all well made and of good quality , I have had no problems with any of them.

I've had good experiences with the Chip McCormick and Tripp Cobra magazines. I think you can remove the bumpers on them.

I want flat bottom magazines.
I assume you mean flush fit mags. Nearly all mags have flat bottoms.

I don't have a preference between 7 or 8 rounds.
If you want flush fit mags, I would always pick a 7 rounder. To me, there really isn't enough space in a flush fit 1911 mag to fit 8 rounds, though admittedly, some companies do it.

I have no experience with them, but if I had to pick among the ones you've given me a choice of, I'd pick either the 7 rounders from Brownell's or the Mec-Gar mags if they are 7 rounders.

C. Mec-Gar (who makes OEM magazines for a lot of companies).
For what it's worth, while the above is true, I can't think of any 1911 they supply OEM mags for. It may not mean anything, and I'm pretty sure the Brownell's 1911 mags are not OEM for any 1911, but you brought up the OEM subject.

Rusty,

You must of missed Question 1 and my answer which is I already have a bunch of Wilson magazines.

Please feel free to rejoin the discussion when you can share opinions on the magazines I listed and Metalform as suggested by RC.

Thank you for mentioning Metalform. My Pony mags work well.
It's not clear to me, are we supposed to limit our recommendations to the mags you listed in your original post, or can we recommend something else?

I have a few hundred rounds through 2 of the Brownell's 8 rounders. I like them, not a hint of a problem yet and they were at a good price as an intro. I'm going to buy 2 more SS.

I also agree with rcmodel, Colt OEM may be Metalform and I believe Kimber are Check-Mates. So to clarify, I have had good success with Colt marked, Kimber marked, Metalform and Check-Mates. Never had a reason to chase the Chip McCormicks, Tripp or Wilsons. It either works and lasts or it doesn't. If it works and lasts there is nothing to improve.

I DO agree there are plenty of sub-standard 1911 magazines out there giving JM Browning's baby a bad name. I suspect close to 90% of 1911 difficulties are actually magazine related. I think the modern taste for tight tolerances somehow make them far less forgiving of magazines that are not right, OR there are simply a lot more crap magazines out there than before.

JTQ,

Keep your suggestions in the same price range as the ones I listed.

Nor does it mean I am going to buy all one brand either. In fact odds are I will buy two different manufacturers.

Mec-Gar lists 7 round 1911 magazines with their logo on them for about $ 23.00 ea. which is a little more than I want to spend unless I can get dealers discount. Brownells lists theirs for $ 20.00 ea. and Metalform for $ 18.00 ea. before I get dealers price.

Then I would second Walkalong's recommendation for the CheckMate line-up from Top Gun Supply.

http://www.topgunsupply.com/check-mate-full-size-1911-7rd-magazines/

The main thing that catches my eye with Brownell's is the shape and design of the follower.
Do you have experience with that follower? It is not in common use by other makers which would make me wonder about the design's advantages.

I was under the impression that Checkmate made the OEM Colt 7-rounders, and these are the mags that work well for me. I shoot 7-rd mags only.

Should add, I prefer the hybrid mags.

Checkmates are top notch, under $20, and you have several options on followers and feed lips. And, as always, stock Colts are tops too. Also under $20.
