I want a new 1911A1 .45 Auto, specificaly an Ed Brown Special Forces 1911A1. However, I simply cannot afford one of those so back to reality...
I can afford up to $650 for a 1911A1.
Does anyone know anything about a Llama or Firestorm 1911? I myself have never read nor heard anything positive about either! I don't see either for sale very often but they are inexpensive.
From the Phillipines: Rock Island/Armscor run between $375-$450 for a plain jane that will definitly require money spent on better sights. Still, that sounds like a good deal for a brand new entry level 1911 5".
Charles Daly: Not sure but i think these too are pumped out of the Phillipines and for an extra couple of hundred bucks it looks loaded with better sights, beaver tail safety, skeletonized this & that all of which looks quite fancy for $575 but I have never had the opp. to closely inspect one.
Taurus PT1911 also look very upgraded and fancy for $550 to $690. Havn't seen one offered for over $690.
To 'me' that is too much money for any Taurus that you cannot 'closely' inspect before purchase like an online purchase. I want or wanted to like Taurus firearms to the point where I bought 2 new Taury revolvers. This was in 2002 when I first started buying new guns. I bought a short barreled .38Spl and a model 627 .357magnum 7-shooter with 6.5" ported barrel. In short, Taurus uses MIM parts as in the hammer of my 627. The problem is there apparently wasn't enuff material in the mold to complete the part and when the side plate is removed it's obvious that a portion of the hammer is not there! ***!! There are some other things obviously wrong like the rear sight retainer screw keeps falling out. Its looks great! but isn't great. The .38 has similar issues.
China Sports Norinco: Some ppl like'em, some do not. These made in China examples of the 1911A1 have no bells and no whistles. From the few I have seen and handled the finish is not great but the feel is heavy and solid. From what I've seen these run around $450 - $550 in Like New/low round count cond. Still in the box New if you can find one seem to run up to $650. For my elderly eyes they will need sight upgrades. Given they are from 'over there' they probably need a trigger job. They seem to be a very close copy of a 1911A1.
Personaly, I prefer function over looks, I don't need a beaver tail grip safety, skeletonized this or that or a great finish. I Do Need quality materials and parts that are in spec.
I have up to $650 to spend and want to get my moneys worth.
Any information or experience you may have with any of the above mentioned or any 1911A1 under $650 I'd like to hear it.
Recomendations?

I Thank You For Your Time

i have a plane jean GI 45 from high standard = rock island=phillo. made. great gun has sev 1000 rounds threw it now and is still as tight as when i first bought it. at 75yrds i can hit humane target in the chest every time with my hand loads. in war i would kill a running target at that distance

Get you a Rock Island "Tactical". It comes with the Novaks standard plus all the upgrades. On GB they can be had around $450.- $475.00, Keep an eye on "Bellshire Hardware". They list them all the time, Or contact them directly. I got my "Tactical" from them. Great people to deal with. You'll be happier with a "New" pistol with the "lifetime" warranty. I've had no problems with mine. Great shooting and very accurate.

For $650 you have lots of options. I have started buying Norinco's when I can find them. Around here they can still be found for under $390 in excellent condition.

I have seen several 80 series Colts going for $650 used.

RIA seems to get good press, but I am not a fan of cast frames. To each his own.

Good luck on your search.

RIA's etc

I've got a couple rias with over 8k thru them, also some norc's, they are by far my fav's, most of them have over 10k or more.
llamas are hit and miss, I also have a couple of these and they sometimes need some tlc to run, but when they do, very nice indeed.
The firestorm i've heard is a very good shooter, also look at the American Classic, the tactical, comes with nice sites for less than 400 plus the ship. I ordered one from sog the other day.
good luck, all units might need tweaking a bit to please individuals, just the way it is.

I think your prices here are high, also. I see them for $400 to $450 in near-new shape. I bought one new 93 or so and it is a fine gun. I do NOT hear people put them down who actually shoot them or even gunsmiths who modify them. Also, your sights are probably not going to be a problem - the did not come with GI sights, but with tall three dot sights - they are crisp and as good as anything short of fiber optic or illuminated in my book.

The edge these guns have is quality steel, and that's what stands out over other "cheapies." I have about $400 total in this gun, which includes an action job, the safety, hammer, trigger, main spring housing and used grips. (I think it cost $225 nib at a gun show in Fla 15 years ago).

Nork or RIA

CharlieMopic: Either of the two should serve you well. Never owned a RIA but from all my reading its well liked, and has excellent factory service if needed. As to Norks, I've been a big fan for a long time and have a couple NIB and one shooter that all I've done is change the sights. They use standard Colt sights. Rear one I do myself, and front a gunsmith changes for a few bucks. Never had an issue with the trigger or any other parts. I'm fortunate that I live near a well known 1911 fixer and he checks all my 1911's for me when I get one, including the NIB's. The lugs lock up as they should on mine, so with the hard steel Nork uses the barrel and slide should last about forever. Haven't priced any in good while but I paid $425 plus shipping for last NIB I bought. It does seem that price varies by area. I wouldn't sell for less than $500 on todays market.

Where can I find a Norinco 1911a1 for under $450? I'll take it.

There is a gorgeous nickel one for $450 in VA right now (FTF only, though, or I would have bought it). Usually on GB they go $400 to $450 (some go higher, just shop smart). You have to just look around and keep hunting. Good hunting!
