Well I guess you know you're a gonner when you pony up for a second 1911 that's exactly like one you already have! Many of you have seen my Colt Series 70 re-issue that I bought new about 6 months ago. Here it is:
Colt Series 70
With this first one, I had planned to do a bunch of custom modifications on it when I bought it, but after owning it a very short while and shooting it, I realized how elegant, perfect, and classic the gun was just as is. Well, I did put in a longer, Commander-type trigger and put on some black rubber double diamond grips, but really didn't change the gun in any significant way at all. And I love it exactly as is. The pistol is amazingly reliable and trouble free. I have tried more than a half-dozen different brands and styles of magazines and a whole bunch of CorBons, STX, HydraShok, GoldDot, and FMJ ammo... the gun loves ALL of it! So I figured if I want a great base-Colt to make into a custom gun, I will have to buy another new Series 70.
The one in the local gun shop is every bit as nice as the one I already have, so fearing that I might not run across another one anytime soon, and fearing that Colt might stop making them sometime soon, and just thinking that having another duplicate series 70 SOMEHOW made sense, I bought it! (I wonder if Imelda Marcos ever bought two pairs of the same shoes???)
I guess now I am certifiable - a Colt glutton. But at least I'm loving every second of the experience! Not sure yet what "customizing" I will do to this new one, but at least I can customize it to my heart's content and still have a nearly box-stock series 70 in the stable also. I'm thinking about having a serrated flat-top milled onto the top of the slide and adding some Novak night sights, perhaps BCP ignition system, and that might be about all I'd do. I am fortunate.
Now, if Colt does make the rumored Stainless Steel version of the Series 70 this year, I'm going to have to dip into the coffers YET AGAIN.
