Well I guess you know you're a gonner when you pony up for a second 1911 that's exactly like one you already have! Many of you have seen my Colt Series 70 re-issue that I bought new about 6 months ago. Here it is:

Colt Series 70

With this first one, I had planned to do a bunch of custom modifications on it when I bought it, but after owning it a very short while and shooting it, I realized how elegant, perfect, and classic the gun was just as is. Well, I did put in a longer, Commander-type trigger and put on some black rubber double diamond grips, but really didn't change the gun in any significant way at all. And I love it exactly as is. The pistol is amazingly reliable and trouble free. I have tried more than a half-dozen different brands and styles of magazines and a whole bunch of CorBons, STX, HydraShok, GoldDot, and FMJ ammo... the gun loves ALL of it! So I figured if I want a great base-Colt to make into a custom gun, I will have to buy another new Series 70.

The one in the local gun shop is every bit as nice as the one I already have, so fearing that I might not run across another one anytime soon, and fearing that Colt might stop making them sometime soon, and just thinking that having another duplicate series 70 SOMEHOW made sense, I bought it! (I wonder if Imelda Marcos ever bought two pairs of the same shoes???)

I guess now I am certifiable - a Colt glutton. But at least I'm loving every second of the experience! :D Not sure yet what "customizing" I will do to this new one, but at least I can customize it to my heart's content and still have a nearly box-stock series 70 in the stable also. I'm thinking about having a serrated flat-top milled onto the top of the slide and adding some Novak night sights, perhaps BCP ignition system, and that might be about all I'd do. I am fortunate.

Now, if Colt does make the rumored Stainless Steel version of the Series 70 this year, I'm going to have to dip into the coffers YET AGAIN. :(

Preachin to the choir me lad, a true gun owner owns two of everyhting, one to beat up and one to look at, or one to customize and one to keep original, or both to customize, or both to beat on or.........

We have a few of those 70s in the safe, I only fondle the one in the display case because I am afraid that if I touch a new one it may stick to my fingers and besides, I gotta get an M1 carbine...

Love them Colts! The commercial repro is coming!

I'm not a big 1911 fan (gasps heard from the crowd) but that is one pretty gun.:what:

I misunderstood your topic.

A few years ago I had a combination in my life of very limited income, unlimited lust for new and different guns, and a sympathetic and very fair dealer. I was a VERY compulsive trader.

I owned one particular Series 70 Govt. Model which had a beautiful electroless nickel finish, and which was 100% reliable and very accurate with H&G 200 SWC's over a pretty heavy charge of Blue Dot.

In my fickleness, I traded that gun away, got it back, and traded it away again. In all, I owned that particular gun three times. There were several other pieces I owned twice during those years.

I miss most of those guns, and I miss that dealer, often.

Well at least you got two guns …

One time I bid on a revolver listed on an Internet auction and won. Unknown to me a mix-up occurred and the same handgun was listed again under a different item number. Not seeing that it was the same gun I bid again – for a lower figure – and won a second time. It all got straightened out and I got the gun for the lower figure. Still, I get kidded about buying one gun twice.

I'm guilty. A few years ago I bought a Kimber Classic Stainless Target. I liked the gun so much, I decided to get another. Except this time with fixed sights. So about 6 months after I bought the CST, I bought a Classic Stainless.

I really like the new S70 Colt. So much so, I have two rifles for sale in the For Sale Forum (HINT HINT anybody need a deer rifle), so I can get one.

You're well on your way!

I bought 4 Norinco 1911's a few years ago, different only in their consecutive serial numbers... ;)

It's a disease that affects many 1911 owners. I now have a brace of STS new rollmark Colts (not consecutively numbered).

I'm currently debating:

1. Leaving both guns stock.
2. Lightly customizing both to make a unique matched set.
3. Leaving one as a safe queen and the other as a beater.
4. Leaving one stock, and going Gonzo with the other.

Stay tuned.....

Thanks. So when are we gonna see a photo of your brace of pistols?

Am I to understand that, given funds for only a certain size collection, it is better to own 10 pairs rather than 20 different guns?

You'll pardon me if I keep on buying "wrong".

DSK... somehow I'm having a hard time envisioning the "art" of making one of my photos with two guns in it, especially if they're both the same. Not sure I'll ever do that. I still have a number of other great guns that I want to create nices images of before I do any "brace" images. But I do appreciate your photo of the stainless twins! Thanks for sharing it.

Dagurre

Your not nuts, your're very very wise!!!

Beautiful pic of a true workhorse of a firearm. Has everything it needs as you so well pointed out in your original post. I'd rather 2 or 3 of those than any one tricked out tactical gidget giszmo gadgeted gun. But I am very very biased;)

Nothing wrong with that. I myself debated the notion of buying a dupe. However, I've anguished over making any changes to the first one I had, so now I can tinker with one and leave the other bone stock. Eventually I won't have a matched pair, although the photo of one is kinda cool.

Daguerre,You're not " NUTS".I've purchased two of many guns/knives/tools,etc. for back up in case one gets out of My control somehow. I've also done what BobC did.Buying back ,selling away, buying back, etc. Not only with guns but knives too!tom.
