1911 on a $600 budget

So I've get the go ahead to get a new gun, around $600 budget.
I've been wanting a 1911, so I just need to decide which one.
Rock Island is wel within that budget, but so are a lot of others.

The $600 does not include mags and ammo, just the gun.

I'm leaning towards the Ruger or Remington at that price point.
 
Wrong gun type. "Budget" and "1911" do not go well together.

Many guys are going to claim their low end 1911's are awesome, never jam and are absolute tack drivers. I've played with these lower end guns and invariably had problems.

I did get lucky once and scored a used Colt XSE for $650.
 
The Ruger is a bit over $600 but a good example of a stainless 1911 with some semi-custom features. If you prefer something closer to a GI type gun, the Springfield Mil-Spec is in the same price range and a cut above the RIA class. If the budget has any stretch in it, Colts start at $700 these days.
 
In that budget, RIA all the way. I've had several, and still have two. Great value. I would go for the tactical model.
 
I've had a full-sized, GI type RIA for eight years. I've put a lot of ammunition down range from that pistol with no hiccup. I paid just over three hundred back then for a new one. While there is no way you're getting one for that amount now, it should be well under the six C-note requirement. YMMV.
 
Shop around, I just got a new Colt Commander from Palmetto State Armory for $599.99 plus shipping. Ordered it before Christmas, picked it up a couple of weeks ago.
 
Very happy with my Remington R1S. At the time I bought it there was a $75.00 rebate too at that time which arrived faster than most rebates take. I think it was around 600 bucks all said and done.

The Remington R1 and R1 Enhanced, the one I went for, got great reviews from all the mags including Gun Tests, who take no advertising. I am very happy with mine. The Ruger is decent as well. Check CDNN Sports for deals as they always seem to have them on 1911s from Rem or Para. Also check Grabagun and Buds.

ANY 1911 can have problems. I've been at ranges firing away with my RIA Tactical while guys with Kimbers and Wilson Combats cuss on either side of me while clearing jams from their $1500+ guns. I've had great Springfields, but had a S&W 1911 that was a chunk 'o junk. Go figure. I currently have two RIA Tacticals...a full size...and a compact. Both function fine, though the compact needed the sights adjusted. I also have a Magnum Research DE1911C. It is their commander-style version of the 1911. Functions great, accurate, and the trigger was around 3 1/2 pounds out of the box. It runs a bit higher at around $630.
Heck for $600 you could get RIA's Tactical II with combat hammer, skeletonized trigger, adjustable rear sight, and fiber optic front sight.
I've never had a Ruger or Remington but they get good reviews.
 
I have the full sized RIA GI 1911. I carry it. It might not be a tack driver but its reliable and fairly accurate and 7 to 10 yards. Looks like you can get one for around 500 or so.
 
A Ruger SR1911 on sale would be at about $600. After that cheaper SAs and many RIAs. Have heard some good things about Turkish guns, but have not owned one yet.

I you, a relative, or good friend know what to look for in a used 1911 then the used market would open up options.
 
I like my RIAs. However, my Springfield Mil-Spec has been my favorite 1911 for about 20 years. If you can swing it, they have been doing 1911s very well for a long time.
 
Why do people say budget and 1911 don't go well together? I have a Turkish Tisas 1911 GI model, and I have shot 2000 rounds of ball ammo through the gun. It is dead on accurate out to 50 yards as any GI Model should be with fixed sights. From zero to 25 yards, and you are shooting 2 1/2 to 3 inch groups easy off hand, and they gun hasn't had one malfunction.
I paid less than $400 for the gun and two mags extra. I don't understand the comments. They seem more like rumors.

So yeah. A Turkish 1911 GI Model using Mec-gar mags shoots very well for me. Very, very well.
 
Buds Guns has Ruger 1911s for around $656. Tombstone Tactical has the RIA Tactical in matte Nickel for $500.
 
RIA. Buy one, use your savings on ammo and ignore the crowd who think it is still 1980 and that the prancing power gets you anything more than ripped off.
 
I'll second the Tisas GI. It's finish is 10x better than a RIA, and is more refined. I previously owned a RIA Tactical, so i speak from experience. My only beef with the Tisas is the 22lb recoil spring, which can be easily replaced to better function my reloads. For $349 it was a steal, and for that mine also came with a leather holster.
 
Rock island all the way great guns for non special ed price, I have has my tactical for about a year with no problems, just a bit of very minor finish wear from being dragged around in a leather holster as my edc

Does "new" mean out of the box, never fired or "another"???

If it means "another", I suggest the...choke and gag... Norinco 1911A1. Mine handles like any other 1911 45ACP I've fired. Yeah, yeah I know it's from China but it's the bargain of all time in 45's. These guns are widely used as a base for custom 45's.

I would second JeeperCreeper's list of a 1911 from Ruger, Springfield Armory, or Rock Island Arsenal. Good guns for the money in the $600 price range.
