This is my first time cleaning my 1911 (Dan Wesson Bobtail 10mm) and things were going fine until reassembly. With slide in place, trying to replace the slide stop, the slide seems to have gone too far back and is now locked in place. It won't budge in either direction. The slide stop notch (the one closest to the muzzle) is about 1/8th inch behind where it would be for the slide to be locked in place with the slide stop engaged (the slide stop is not in place). Has this ever happened to anyone else? I'm scared that I have completely ruined my brand new gun and a bit annoyed that such a thing is even possible. I followed the instructions and watched Youtube videos on the process and somehow I managed to **** up. Any assistance would be appreciated. If I need to snap some photos, I can do that too.

Is the slide hanging up on the disconnector? Look at where the the breech face meets the top of the frame, directly below the firing pin hole. With a non-marring tool such as a wooden dowel, press the disconnector down into the frame while applying gentle (remember that the recoil spring is rated twenty pounds or more) pressure from the rear.

If the disconnector is the culprit, I would telephone Dan Wesson about possible solutions. The existing disconnector may shoot in. Wesson may send you a replacement disconnector trusting that you will manage the detailed strip and reassembly needed to do the replacement yourself (I'll bet against that,) or they may want the gun back for service.

I like what the guys are saying. If all else fails, is there a gunsmith near you? Sounds like a 5 minute fix, and he'll probably show you what went wrong so's it doesn't happen again.
What comes to mind is it could be the link is in front of the pin, or perhaps the spring guide is caught behind the rear of the slide in the dust cover.

The barrel was evidently seated improperly and the smacking in my palm thing worked. I've got it back together now and things seem to be good. Thank you all, I appreciate the help greatly.

You need to have the barrel link hanging forward when you put the slide to the frame. If not it can jam and even if it doesn't jam you won't be able to get the slidestop through it's hole.

Nothing to get "annoyed" over. :D
