me and my cousin both bought yugo sks's last week and took them to the range....mine fired 200 rounds without a flinch...my cousin's never fully cycled....always leaving the spent round in the chamber....did some research and found the 2 most common problems of 1.being dirty and 2. the gas valve assembly....cleaned both the rifles to the max...examened his gas vavlve compared to mine and it seemed to be perfectly fine.....so we broke both rifles down completely and compared every part side by side...the only two differences we found was that 1. my gas piston was polished and his looked like it was right off the laythe and 2. the spring on his short rod (the one that will fly out if you not carfull when dissassembling) was about 1/4-1/2 inch shorter...would the spring deing to short cause it to not cycle fully???i know it seems like is might but when i was looking at it, it seemed as though it wouldnt matter...we plan to go back to the range and put my parts in his rifle to further diagnose the probmlem but that will probly me a while from now so any help yall can offer would be great...thanks alot everyone

For the first time ever I detail cleaned my Yugo SKS. Up until now it worked fine, but today at the range, it did what you described, except the bolt wouldn't even noticably travel backwards after each shot. I'm sure I probably screwed up something during re-asembly. I was going to start a thread about this, but you beat me to it.

Can anybody tell us how to fix this?

Back when you could buy SKS's for $90 a piece, the thing you had to do before shooting them was to completely clean the gas system on the gun to gewt out the old cosmoline and grease that was packed inside. It would fire without doing this, but would carbon and gum the gas system up so bad that it had to be soaked in thinner for days to help loosen up the fouling.

Yugo SKS rifles are notorious for not cycling. All of them were fed a steady diet of corrosive ammo and then poorly cleaned.

This led to serious pitting of the gas valve, the piece that you rotate to set the rifle to grenade launching mode.

If you speak to Tuc, tell him P.J. says hello. He will get a kick out of it.

His gas valves will make your Yugo SKS function like it was brand new. They are probably running low on the latest batch so you better hurry. Ten bucks is cheap to fix a rifle that has you pulling your hair out after every shot.

its not the gas valve

i know how to operate the gas valve and what position it should be it....i checked for corrosion and its not at all.....no holes are blocked no fowling nothing in that nature....i think it has to do with the shortened spring....and if your bolt isnt moving at all after you shoot then make sure the gas valve is rotated to the side of the gun...if its in the top position it wont cycle at all this was for the granade launcher....that is if you have a yugo....what im asking is could the shortened spring cause it not to cycle completely?it does move the bolt just doesnt let go of the casing....it never reaches the exstractor......

Yes, a worn recoil spring can and will affect cycling. I replace mine when the spring becomes 1/4 - 1/2 inch shorter than a new one. Regaring the post about Yugo's being known for not cycling, I cant speak to that, only to say Mine has never had an issue cycling. However mine was new never fired when I bought it.

just try swapping the gas valve and the spring and see if your rifle exhibits the same symptoms, then try it with just one of them swapped, maybe you can pinpoint which one is the guilty party, Yugo 59/66s are known though for the gas valve issues so it may be worth getting your hands on one of the replacement ones, good luck
