Okay it's down to the wire now and I may make a move on a final revolver tomorrow.
As you know I've been lusting for a cold python for about 2 years but also realize the value and beauty of the model 27 and 357 Magnum"Pre 27"
The only other gun I'm considering is a stainless satin 627.

I have numerous large hunting revolvers by Dan Wesson Smith & Wesson Freedom Arms and Ruger so here I'm looking for a 3.5 to 5-in Barrel more for open carry and occasional shooting. Something nice as a treat for my half-century birthday which is part of why the 2020 Colt Python would make sense although I could also find a model 27 or 27- 1 or 27-2 that could be right around my actual birthday as opposed to my half-century mark.

Anyway what are some final thoughts in that battle between Colt and Smith & Wesson 27 ?

For an older S&W, I'll take it. I don't keep track of all the dash numbers but for me it would be anything with a pinned barrel. For new gun to new gun, Colt Python, hands down. Above both guns, a Heritage model 24.

I bought a new Python last year because I did not have a Colt revolver, wanted one, and single action revolvers and I do not get along.

I like it, it shoots well.

But I also have a couple S&W 27-2. I'm an S&W fan.

Sorry, I'm no help.

I dont have a Python but I have a 27-2 27-2.jpg

Thanks guys
Yeah I know about Dan Wesson and I'm still a fan but not as in love as I used to be but you'll probably be mad when you hear this:
Last week I bought a three Barrel pistol pack with all the tools and gauges and a two four and six inch barrel with the original styrofoam box and box cover in outstanding condition with blue in and great condition for $800 locally.

Wow, great score!

Not to brag, but a couple years ago, I picked up a 6" DW15 and a 8" DW22- $900 for the pair. The shop selling them was all about plastic tacticool stuff and didnt even want the revolvers in their case. Winning!

I've owned both Pythons, and Model 27's. It would be a toss-up for me also. If it means anything, I still have the Pythons. I don't really think they're any "better" it's just that I've always wanted them, and they don't seem to turn up like Smith and Wesson's do. The "Legacy" Pythons are so far out of my price range, I never even seriously considered them. When the 2020's came out I grabbed the first one I saw, and then later found a second one online. I don't think I've seen another for sale since, but I will admit that I don't look for them anymore. I like to buy, sell, and trade guns, but I've never considered selling the Pythons.

I did have a minor problem with the first Python I bought. The sideplate screws came loose after 500 or so rounds. Fortunately I caught it before it became a major problem and was able to fix it myself by just tightening the screws. It's never happened again, through another 300 or so rounds before the Covid stopped me going to the range. The second one, a 4" version, I haven't fired for the same reason. I hope to get back to the range soon.

For what it's worth, I've never had a problem with a Smith and Wesson. New, used, it doesn't matter.

I think the mystique and the name of the Python is what many folks are attracted to. Both revolvers will do the same , are about the same size, same weight, same capacity. From what I've read and the examples I have handled, the quality of the new Pythons and the new 27s are about the same. Both use MIM for ease of assembly and manufacture. One has a full underlug and is stainless and one is not full underlug and comes blued. Colt gives you a one year written warranty, S&W gives you a lifetime warranty. Difference in cost(MSRP) is about $500. I doubt very much if quality will go down when CZ takes over, but they probably will include their name in the markings. In today's market, both are hard to find, with the Python probably not going for below MSRP. The S&W probably would.

As others have said, go with what turns you on. I personally for the monies, would go with the 627. Stainless, and 8 rounds. Tuned action and cut for moonclips.

Thanks guys

No sir:D I do like my Dan Wessons in fact I thought I would never be so lucky he has to be able to afford something like that again and while in the process of pursuing buying a near New 20/20 python I stumble into it.
I was used to buying Dan Wesson's in good condition for 500 3 years ago and they skyrocketed and I sold two of my three as I was thinning out my collection of 357's.
I kind of regretted it but money was good and it bought me and my son a Chesapeake Bay Retriever puppy Plus paid off a credit card.
You can't have everything.
But God was good and since one better back to me.
Still I can't get rid of this bug for the python but I am sure I'd be happy with a shorter barreled model 27.

BTW 627s are unobtainium currently.
I have a 5-in PC thankfully already but I'm looking for something with a shorter Barrel.
We'll see how some auctions go.
If I can get a deal on the model 27's been good otherwise I have to figure out about a 20/20 python.
But my true concern is ammo:what::cuss:

I'd buy the King Cobra while you can. They will only go up in value, you do not know what changes will be made in the future, and you don't even know if you will be able to find one. The smiths have been around for years, and isn't going anywhere anytime soon.

I had a 6” Colt Python many years ago. (I bought it used in immaculate condition for $400, so you have an idea of just how long ago it was :(). And while I really liked it, I hardly ever shot it and it was too nice to put it in a holster. So I sold it and replaced it with, IIRC, a Ruger Security Six stainless. Later on, at a local gun show, I stumbled upon a nice, mechanically sound 4” S&W Model 28 for $225, some holster wear but good bore and tight lockup. I still have it, and a few months ago, splurged on a NIB 6” Model 28 for the most I have spent on a handgun ($875). There is just something about those old N frame S&W’s pinned and recessed. Now my challenge is to keep it unfired, maybe. I guess my recommendation is to get the Python if you plan to keep it pristine, or find a nice used Model 27 (or 28), if you want to enjoy shooting it.

Nothing will ever replace a Prancing Pony Colt’s, and the new Pythons are BETTER in every way over the originals.

Are you sure? There are tons of bad reviews like this to be found: https://www.northwestfirearms.com/threads/2020-colt-python-failure.330612/

I handled one when they first came out and it had a nice SA pull, apparently due to the light strike issues Colt changed the action so that the later one I handled had a bad SA trigger pull. I'm a Colt guy but among your two choices I'd go with an older S&W.

So what is the deal with CZ taking over Colt I had not heard.
Gosh CZ quite the Monopoly they took over Dan Wesson and at least they started making the interchangeable Barrel 357 again.
But are they completely taking over a colt?
Why and when?
And what does CZ stand for and what city and country did they originate in?
