I have a Ruger .22 hornet that was converrted to Khornet. I know you can load standard 22 hornet and shot them in the khornet chamber and then you have Khornet brass to reload. This is where I am haveing trouble. I am reloading the khornet brass using RCBS dies for a khornet. After neck sizing; when I seat the bullet; 45 gr. soft point the neck collapses into the shoulder area of the brass. I have tried several adjustsments and cant get the bullet to seat without this happening. Does anyone have any suyggestions that would help.

G'day Mate & welcome to the site ! THe K hornet is a Old friend of mine!:banghead: I have owned several ovr the Years & always gone back to the standard Hornet (If it ain't broke why try & fix it ?) you need to really open your necks up & when itcomes to seating the bullet . The word gently comes to mind .You really have to "feel" the Bullet into place. I used to just virtuarly just use the wieght of the arm of the press dropping to seat the bullet as any amount of pressure will buckle necks .

Steelerfan: Our Aussie buddy has started you in the right direction but what you need to do is chamfer the inside of the case mouth on all once fired cases. Lyman, RCBS, and others mane a chanfering tool just for that purpose. Theses cases only have to be done once, and your problems should be over. FYI, I had my Ruger 77VT rifle rechambered to 22K-Hornet and am very pleased with the results. One other suggestion if I may is to switch over to a neck size die instad of a FL sizing die...your cases will last longer and head separations will lessen. Good Luck!

I once had a K-Hornet in a Ruger #3 carbine. I parted with it and the dies many years ago.

However, I found that besides reaming the necks, that with some brass, I needed to use an neck expander die, to keep from crushing the cases.

Lee now makes an excellent die for this. They call it a Universal neck expander die, usually used for expanding pistol necks for seating lead bullets, and to a lesser extent, rifles for seating cast bullets.

However, you will find that it will work excellently for the K-Hornet, to allow proper seating. You WILL need to slightly crimp the neck back down onto the bullet to allow proper feeding into the firearm. Be sure not to over do either. Just a slight flair, and just a light touch of the crimp die when seating to return the neck to flat.

Something that will alleviate using the expander die is to use boat-tail bullets. The Nosler 40gr Balistic Tip is probably the best bullet available for the K-Hornet, so should allievate all your problems.

Also, Lyman makes an "M" die, but you will need to get the "SHORT" die body and the .22cal expander punch for it. (I got one many years ago. I also have a "LONG" die body, and numerous punches..... .30, .35, .44, .45), so I can use any combination for various calibers.

I have also used a Lee Universal Powder measure die and the various pistol die -powder through expander plugs to load rifle and pistol cartridges with my Lee Pro-1000 dies, and Load Master presses.

Sometimes it just takes a little creative imagination to solve some of your reloading problems.

You can even take a nail and slighty wiggle-wobble it around in the inside of your case to slightly enlarge the neck to flare it enough to get the bullet to seat. Been there, and done that too! It worked on the occasions I've needed to do it. (.45/70 cases before I got an expander plug for it)

Again, just don't over do it, or your case won't fit in the seater die! If you do, just roll the case with your fingers on the loading bench to take it back down a little.

Good Luck with your K-Hornet.

Chamfer the mouth inside

I've never had a problem with my Lyman K-Hornet dies. I've even resized with no expander button at all, when I noticed the ball was not concentric. No problem.

steelerfan,
Are you crimping the bullets? If so then seat the bullets in one operation and crimp in a separate operation.

K-Hornet

Was named by/for Lysle Kilbourn, its inventor.

Steelerfan, my K-Hornets measure 1.816" overall with a length from case head to the ogive ( point back from the bullet nose where it first achieves .224 dia.) of 2.561". The necks, with a seated bullet, are 0.239" in diameter. A fired, unsized case has a neck diameter of 0.244"

What's going on with your K-Hornet?

To clarify,

the length to the ogive is measure with a seating depth comparator, so it's longer than OAL.
