.22 Magnum Pistol for Long Distance Shooting?

Am looking for pistol for shooting out to 100 yds., in one of the .22 calibers. Possibly suitable for mounting scope or red dot sight, 8-10" barrell, 2-3 lbs. weight, under $400.
Any pistol recommendations?
Will .22 magnum from a long barrelled pistol group well at 100 yds.? (say 2" or less group)
(I have no experience shooting .22 wmr, but want a little more UMF! than .22lr)
 
Heh. I missed the "$400" part :p.

Honestly, a long-barrelled Taurus would be your next best bet. Single Sixes are fun, but unless seriously tuned they're not the most accurate things in the world, 'specially not at that range. :scrutiny:
 
If you don't mind a single shot and a little more weight a used T/C Contender should come in just under $400. The 10 inch .22 Mag bull barrels have should group about an inch at 100 yards. In the same noise range but even more accurate is the .22 hornet - which is great fun if you reload.

Ruger Single Six Long barrelled version.

Used to shoot an Old Tackle box by the pond every morning with one.

Range was about 400 yards or so.

Bullet flight time was a full "1000, One" count.

One second range of a .22 Magnum = 400 Yards.
 
Also look at the Savage Striker bolt action pistols. There is a .22 mag rimfire version with a five shot magazine, and .22 LR with a ten shot magazine. After installing a Rifle Basix sear you'll have no problems managing 2" at 100 yards. Of course, bolt action pistols do kinda stretch the definition of pistol!
 
Im having a hard time with the 400 yard 22 tackle box pistol sniper thing....but who am I to say?

Id have a hard time with a scoped rifle @400 yards.
 
I'd look at NEF short barreled break action rifles.
You can find them in .22, .223, and .22 hornet.
They can be had fairly light, and tapped for red dot or scope mounts.
They're bigger and heavier than 10" revolvers, but the handi-rifles, and survivor series aren't that much heavier.
In .223 they would be more accurate than any pistol in their price range.
They could be had for less than $250 in my neck of the woods.
Put the money you save into optics, and get you some!

Lightweights are around 5 pounds, IIRC.
Survivors are around 6 lbs., but have a pistol grip, hammer extension, and are drilled and tapped, and come stock with a scope mount. For about $350.00
They take down and re-assemble very quickly, have storage in the grip, and you can buy barrels in different calibers including .308, .45 colt, .357, shotgun calibers, etc., and have them fitted very cheaply.

Fire off 6 shots a day at the same target and do it for a year you WILL eventually learn how to do it!

At that range 6 X 12 target 50% hit rate, after about a year of working at it.
 
a while back, after my dad bought me a Heritage Rough Rider .22LR/.22WMR revolver i took it to the range. i was shooting LR for the whole session, but then at the end i put the magnum cylinder in and decided to take some shots at the 100 yard target i had put up, but not used. while standing, i fired all 6 rounds, not expecting to hit the target at all. when i went down to remove the target, i found that i had put all 6 rounds into an 8 inch group that was fairly centered in the target. that deffinately sold me on the accuracy potential of the .22WMR, and the potential of this very inexpensive gun, when fed decent ammo

Chevrofreak, same questions as above on your Heritage Rough Rider?

E357, assume the sights on the Thompson Contender would be adjustable? If I get a TC rimfire version, I wouldn't be able to shoot centerfire at a later date if I want to swap out barrels would I?

Is anybody familiar with "Millet"sights? Had a friend tell me that his father's Ruger Single Six, .22 mag, with "Millett" sights will group 2" at 100 yds.
 
T/C contenders are very accurate and since the adjustable sights or scopes are attached to a barrels - they stay zeroed when you change calibers in the field. But, they are single shot so no rapid fire. They are VERY addictive and most people I know wind up with about 10 barrels/calibers or so and a few "frames".

If you buy a used frame on gunbroker or auction arms and your barrel used. You will not loose any money if you decide to sell. The prices only go up. And everybody swaps barrels/calibers like crazy.

You can shoot anything from .17 Hornady, 22 short to 45/70 from the same pistol and convert back and forth from rifle to pistol. T/C actually took the BATF to the Supreme Court and Won a ruling that allows conversion between pistol and carbine/rifle in the field.

If you want to pack a 1 MOA deer rifle in a brief case or backpack you just can't beat it.

The "accurate reloading fourums" - "single shot pistol forum" is a wealth of information and a sink hole for your cash if you know what I mean.

scotjute, my gun just has the stock Colt SAA style fixed front blade, and the trough in the top strap above the cylinder.

i believe my barrel is 6.5"
 
I've probably done as much 100 yard 22lr revolver shooting as pretty much anyone here. And I'm friends with a very, very accomplished 100 yard handgunner that has a 7.5" Freedom Arms 22lr... We've both shot iron sights including premium silhouette sights, scopes and red dots...

Having said that, I think that consistant 2" groups with iron sights or a red dot in anything other than a gun held in a solid rest has a lot more to do with religion than an accurate handgun. ;)

And oomph or not, if shooting at paper, I'd be willing to bet that a 22lr will create smaller groups than 22Mag 99% of the time. I'm not a 22Mag hater at all... I've probably taken more small game with my 22Mag than my other rifles combined.

7 1/2 Inches or so with adjustable sights.


At that range the bullet doesn't exit the tackle box and doesn't expand, just flattens the lead ahead of the jacket some.
 
I carried a Ruger three screw SingleSix convertable for years while squirrel hunting. I had a T/C 3X scope mounted. The combination was deadly out to about 50 yards, maybe a little more.

I know some claim dime sized groups with a .22 Mag, but I have found from shooting a variety of guns chambered for the souped up rimfire, that those size groups are hard to get.

My squirrel gun would take a tree rat reliably to 50 yards. After that, the small size target, movement, and foliage just made accurate shots real problematic.
