.22 revolver

Anyone out there own any relatively inexpensive .22 revolvers? Can be SA/DA either/or. Im looking for one to keep in the truck and pack around on the farm for varmints and such. Looking for advice on what to look at and what to stray away from as well. 6 shots is fine doesnt have to be a higher capacity revolver. Ive never dealt with any .22 wheelguns only .357's made by S&W.

You'll have to define what's expensive. Not much out there for under 3 bills, maybe a hertiage, NAA 'Earl, those are the only 2 I can come up with.

Ruger Single Six convertible is probably the best option. Not exactly cheap, MSRP is $569 for blue, $639 for stainless. Still cheaper than the S&W offerings.

I used to own a stainless single six convertible, traded it to help pay for a S&W 617. The 617 is gone, no regrets, I still miss the Ruger. These days my .22 revolver needs are met by a S&W Model 18, but these go for $550 or more second hand. If I was going to use a handgun for small game hunting then the Single Six would once more grace my safe.

I've got a couple. I bought an old Hi-Standard Sentinel R-106 a couple of months ago for $175.00. No idea how old it is, I guess it's from the early 70's or so, but it looks pretty much like new. Four inch barrel, aluminum frame, nine shots, 22 LR, semi adjustable rear sight, about the size of a Smith & Wesson K frame. Of course they don't make it anymore, the company is long out of business, but they're out there on the used market. Good shooting little gun.



Last week I bought a Heritage Rough Rider to try for myself. So far in limited handling and even more limited shooting, I'm impressed with it. For less than $200.00 NIB, it's not bad. No, it's not a Single-Six but for what I paid for it, it will no doubt make a decent plinker.



Those are the two "inexpensive" 22's I've got. Sure, Smith & Wesson, Colt, and Ruger (and a few others) make nicer guns, but you asked for "inexpensive."

You could hit a couple of gun shops and look for used H&R revolvers. They often go for less than $200 around here. They're decent guns that you don't have to shed tears over if they get a little beat up. They won't win any beauty contests but that isn't why they were built in the first place.

You could also look at the Heritage guns. Views are pretty varied on them but they run around $200 with both the long rifle and mag cylinders. I've met two happy Rough Rider owners but don't have any hands on experience.

Honestly for infrequent use basically any cheap .22lr revolver will do what you want it to.

I'm a happy Rough Rider owner, too, and it sounds like one would be perfect for the purpose you describe.

You should be able to find a used Ruger Six Single Blued model for around $300 and Slainless Steel will tack another $100 within my area..which is N.C.

For lifetime of accuracy and reliabilty I'd suggest you open up the wallet a little further. If you don't mind letting the odd varmint get away then the Heritage, H&R and other lower cost options are fine.

I've got two H&R's, had a Hi Standard Double 9 and got an old 3 screw Single Six a while back. The accuracy of the Single Six make me look like I'm throwing handfuls of pebbles at the target when I shoot the other guns. Really. My groups are twice or near twice the size with the others than what I get with the Single Six at any given distance.
