22" vs 20" barrel length

For some barrels a different length will vibrate differently; short stubby barrels are more stable than long whippy barrels, or so they say. However, when a rifle barrel is shortened, it is recrowned and I suspect that is a bigger change factor than the new length of the barrel.

I view barrel length as a trade off between balance and pointability and velocity. In general, shortening the barrel will decrease velocity a bit (10 fps to 50 fps per inch, YMMV, depending on the primer/power/bullet combination) and change the barrel harmonics. The real question is how the rifle ergonomics work for your application. In my view, velocity is always secondary to bullet placement.
