.22lr AR upper.

Yea, I don't think so. Those are about $450-$500 aren't they? I already have a 10/22 so I have a "true .22 rifle". I want something to slap on my lower and go.

Do those work well? I haven't heard much good for those both in the way of accuracy and reliability. I've seen .22 uppers for $275-$350, which isn't much more than the BCG conversion kit. I don't mind paying a little more for something a little better.

Conversion bolt will be cheapest. I had a Spikes version and it worked pretty well out to 25 yards. At 50 it started to open up a bit. I purchased a CMMG upper and it is noticeable more accurate, but easily twice the price. You ought to be able to find a conversion bolt for under $200.

I built up a complete dedicated LH AR from a New Frontier (poly) lower and a CMMG Revolution upper configured for LH. Unlike a conversion, the barrel twist is 16:1 (from recollection), I added the upgraded New Frontier hammer for such an application. It all fit together perfectly and works nicely.
I wanted a REAL .22, not a conversion kit with improper barrel twist nor a dedicated .22 that uses more plastic and can't be modified for other uses. I plan to use this lower (although I have a few unused lower receivers) as a testbed to enable me to build up a few different uppers: 6.8, .300BO, whatever. All in LH.
Fun hobby.
Best of luck,
B

I finally found a CMMG LW .22 Upper in stock and ordered it. It will become a pink AR for my wife. It's listed for less elsewhere, but they don't have it, and haven't for some time.

I bought a CMMG based on positive posts about them. Hopefully it will run well. I expect it to.

Can't remember the brand, but CDNN has been advertising 22 dedicated uppers for several weeks....I think they were $239 at last ad.

Had a defective cmmg that they wouldn't repair. Sold it to a guy who wanted it anyway. He ended up scrapping it. They make plenty of good .22 uppers that many have been happy with, but I won't try them again.

Yeah, mine is the most reliable semi auto .22 I own. The only one close is my old Nylon 66. Min isn't an upper it is a complete CMMG rifle it is the Quebec-A. The lower is just a standard lower (pretty much the same as most others). It came with one magazine. I like the CMMG magazines ok, but prefer BlackDog magazines.

I agree, if you go with a complete .22 AR, the 15-22 is a really nice rifle. Kind of light, but shoots great.

IIRC I paid $450 for my CMMG Quebec-A (pre-panic). I sold my S&W M&P15-22 to fund the CMMG. I will be honest the only reason I did it was to have a standard AR lower. The M&P15-22 is a great rifle. They are accurate, lightweight and conpatable with most AR parts. To be honest the only reason I didn't like it was the quad rail and plastic lower that was proprietary. If you just want one that will eat anything and not worry about swapping uppers and such, but the S&W. While it might not be the .22 for me, it is perfect for the majority of the shooters.

Thanks for all the responses guys! That's a lot info for me to sift thru, though I like the upper for $239, gonna have to look into that. I'm not a fan of the mossberg ar thing. It's just a plinkster with a different stock. I'm in agreement with you CharlieDJ. I want something that has a true AR lower. Anyone have experience with the chiappa 22 upper? I've read some good things about it on other forums but I trust you gentleman more.

If it's in the budget a complete upper is the way to go. The bolt conversions work well enough out to 25 yards or so, but there's also the worry of clogging the gas port with the lead and/or soft copper from .22 LR bullets. I'm another happy CMMG customer.

Anyone have experience with the chiappa 22 upper?

My experience with Chiappa's customer support on my 1911-22 has them off my list.

Main issue with the conversion kits is the 5.56 barrel 1 in 7 to 1 on 9 twists are "too fast" for .22lr which is usually more like 1 in 16. I've had good results with my CMMG conversion (no gas tube clogging issues even after 500 rounds of bulk pack in a single session) and CMMG 22lr AR pistol I've made into a short barrel rifle. If you have an optic you may encounter POA/POI issues with the conversions if you go much past 25 yards, and certainly past 50.

So I'd say the conversion is the way to go for maximum economy but a dedicated upper is the best way to go.

The 15-22 has already been mentioned, another one to consider is the SIG 522, not exactly an AR but it uses the same "Black Dog" .22lr magazines as would the dedicated upper or CMMG conversion kit, the 15-22, like the Uramex/Colt each use their own proprietary magazine.

A range buddy had a .22 conversion for his AR and liked it, but after he bought his Sig 522 he never uses it. Swears he is faster with the Sig shooting the steel challenge. Last I heard he still loves the Sig 522.
