How quiet is .22LR Sub Sonic ammo?
How much quieter is it than standard or high velocity?
Would you shoot it in the back yard of a house in the city?

I'd go more with CB caps and a rifle in the city. Report may still be an issue though.

I was going to try a few in my backyard but I took some to the range and it sounds just as loud as a normal .22 with out the sonic crack... so I did not try it....o well I guess thats what airguns are for.

CB caps are extremely quiet. Subsonic is quieter than the other stuff, and it has the added benefit of running the action on my Marlin, and not converting it to a bolt action. CBs can take out an armadillo, so smaller critters shouldn't be an issue. Similar noise level to some airguns.

I used to have a squirrel problem at my old house. My load of choice was CB 22s out of a 24" barrel. They are quieter than my Benjimen 22 air rifle. The sub sonics are louder. A lot has to do with the barrel lenth. A long barrel is almost like a suppressor.

Don't shoot the Aquila super or regular Colibris from a long rifle barrel. They will not always make it out of the gun. The super Colibris will make it out of my 10/22 with enough power to kill squirrels. CBs are much better in a rifle. Colibris are a hoot in a revolver.

I wouldn't shoot any .22 LR in the back yard, in the city.

It is unsafe, as well as very likely illegal, plane & simple.

CB caps are nice and quiet...really they're on par with a nice pellet rifle if memory serves. Like...800 FPS? that sound about right?
I know some of the nicer Benjamin models get up in there right?
In terms of a nice pellet gun with a pellet load, isn't a .22 CB right down the same lines? Technically in city limits it's probably still illegal, but from a safety/ballistics standpoint isn't it about the same?

With a heavy hex barrel, .22 subs, and a bottle, there is only the hammer falling to warn the squirrels. I love it. My subs are pretty close to supers, so there's plenty of power.

With a heavy hex barrel, .22 subs, and a bottle,

Got a license for that bottle? Unless it doesn't actually touch the rifle somehow, you've got a suppressor without a tax stamp. Ten years in a federal pokie.

Well, if I don't ask I'll never learn- what are CBs?

Conical Ball. Think of it as a .22 ultra short. They're little rounds with no, or almost no powder in them. I think they might propel the bullet entirely with priming compound.

remington sub sonic hollow pints in a 10/22 carbine in 23 degree temps, make no noise other then the bullet impact on wood, the slide cycleing, and a caseing hitting ice. Rather strange thing really.

I've found the remington cb's a little more accurate in my rifles than the cci. Too bad remington quit making them.

CB's are quiet and compared to an air rifle, fairly powerful, but I've never gotten what I consider to be acceptable accuracy from them. Aguila SSS are more accurate and hit as hard as a standard .22lr, but they're fairly noisy. Their extra long bullets also tend to keyhole past about 30 yards.

IMO there are only two really good options for the serious shooter who has noise concerns. You can either buy a high quality airgun or go the NFA route and get a suppressor. If you just need to whack a few pests however, CB's or a lower end airgun will do the job so long as you don't expect too much out of them.

MVF, CB bullets are loaded with a 29gr bullet and have a small amount of powder and are rated for about 750 fps and 30fp of energy. My walmart used to carry them. I haven't looked for them in a while.

The Aquila colibri and super colibri are rated for 350 and 500 fps. The manufactuer does not recommend that they be shot in rifle lenth barrels. I agree. I have had them stick in the 24" barrel of my Remington bolt action. I have a new 1 in 9 twist barrel for my 10/22 and they shoot fine out of that. They worked best in a 6.5" ruger single six.

My Benjemin 22 pump gets around 600fps with 10 pumps for about 12 fp of energy. Hope this clears up the mystery.

cb shorts, and cb longs are made by CCI, Aguila makes colibri, and super colibri's. the cb shorts and longs , are a tad hotter than the Aguila. if you have a long rifle only chamber, use the cb longs, or any of the Aguila's. If you are shooting these out of a rifle, the Aguila Coibris, are very weak, so you may wanna check down your bbl, after you shoot them. The super colibris will come out fine, but the coibiris may or may not make it out of your bbl, so you need to check after shooting them.

.22LR sub sonics

they needs silencer. There in Finland is the adapter for plastic water- or soda bottle to silencer thread ( It is standart threads in all .22 LR silencer and bottles ). You don´t need the drill, only one shot for bullet hole. :)

It just seems silly to me to shoot any firearm in the city when it is illegal and might promote the loss of your firearm(s). Just buy a decent airgun and be happy. Of course, if it isn't illegal, then by all means...have fun.
