Has anyone ever seen a .243 M14 type rifle. I'm thinking about one, my main question is should I go for the extra lug?

I know, I know, a bolt action would be ideal, but I've got no L4-L5 disc left, and I'm slight of build.

Hmmm... never heard of one, but an interesting idea. You might want to contact the boys up in Geneseo and tell them of the idea.

Might be a good seller for Springfield.

Springfield Armory, Inc. used to make .243 and 7mm-08 M1As. I looked over a .243 once, but ended up getting the .308....now I wish I had bought either of the others. They are hard to find now and expensive.

But you could always rebarrel an M1A. There was a .243 barrel for sale on WarRifles.com a few weeks ago and I think Douglas could make one.

IMO The extra lug on the receiver isn't worth it unless you are a match shooter and re-bed your rifle frequently.

I dunno if they do exist, I figured more people would have done it :(

seems like a really great antelope/varmint rifle to me.

The M1A was definitely chambered in .243 when they first came out. We had a SuperMatch in the shop I worked in long ago. Early 80's. The guy who bought it almost had his arms torn off when he strolled into a Montreal gun show looking to sell it. There were none in Quebec in those days.
They were chambered in .243Win, .308Win and .358Win. No 7mm-08's though. All chamberings but the .308 were dropped. Not enough sales.

I recall that M1 Garands for civilian sale in France had to be
a non-military caliber like .270 and that SA did make a few.
From a .270 M1 Garand to a .243 M1A is not that big a leap.

I travel in non gun friendly locales (NY & Cali)

So the priority is a "non-scurrryyyy" rifle.

Plus I want a 7.62mm rifle as well, and the mags should be completely interchangeable.

Why not?

Colt made the AR series in .222 for sale south o' the border and in other countries that don't allow sale of firearms in military calibers. Fact I just remembered I have a 30 round Colt AR mag that's marked .222.

ziadel, just get a pair of Remington 750 Woodsmasters.

10-rounders available, you can't legally bring in bigger mags to California anyway. 4-rounders come with the guns; that makes them hunting legal in states with a magazine limit for hunting.

Same mag works for .243 and .308. Accuracy is bolt-action-class, according to Gun Tests; problems with 74x gas system have been fixed. .308 available in rifle and carbine configurations, walnut or synthetic. .243 in rifle length only.

2 rifles cost about the same as one M1A. They're a lot lighter, too, which should help with your back.

Legal in CA.

thanks for the info armed bear, but lighter is not the way to go for me, I need a heavy rifle to shoot well.

Aren't there BARs made in such calibers? Not the WWII guns, but the semi hunting guns made later. Not sure about high-cap magazines, or about the recoil management for the medical condition though.
