I was in a local gun shop yesterday and saw a mauser in 257 roberts for a really good price it was scoped it need some work but not alot. My question is how does the 257 roberts compare to the 243 thanks
Its wayyy cooler than a 243. And has a longer barrel life. But they are similar in performance. The advantage is the Roberts can heave larger bullets, up to 120gr. The advantage of the 243 is ammo availability.
Bob is a great quarter bore cartridge. With 100 gr bullets they are neck-in-neck on velocity @ 3,000 fps. With 75 gr, the .243 is marginally ahead and with heavier than 100 gr, Bob takes the lead. Honestly speaking, it's six of one, half dozen of the other. But Bob in a Mauser action is sweet, so if you like the rifle, go for it.
I would have bought on the spot to but I don't have the money at the time. I have looked at the 257 roberts for some time now. Like I said I have a 243 and I have a 30-06 so I really don't need it but the price is so good that its hard not to want it. Its only 225 so it got me to thinking.
The only Bob I ever shot was an old "Red Pad" Ruger 77 with a tang safety, three holes touching @ 100 yds regardless of bullet weight! It wasn't mine, and he wouldn't part with it. We ate many back-straps because of that Ol 257 Bob.
