ive decided to trade the Icon after deer season ive narrowed it down to these 2. It will be used mostly for deer prob 95% maybe if I ever got to go elk hunting that also of the 2 which would you recommend

Honestly there's not a starved house mouse's worth of difference betwixt the two.

In this comparison the gun fit and price become the dominant factors.

I agree with R.W.Dale. The 270 is the 30/06 necked down to use lighter bullets.

However, since you asked, if you want to use heavier bullets for something, the nod goes to the 30/06. If you hunt mostly deer, the 270 is nice with 130 grain bullets for slightly less recoil. 30/06 is the more popular cartridge so ammo and brass are slightly more common. Personally, I'd go with 30/06, but I hunt elk every year.

i used to have a 270 took every deer ever shot with it but also had a friend dropped everyone with a 30_o6

I would say 270 because it can do whatever the 06 can do but with less recoil and a flatter trajectory. I personally like the way a good 30 cal drops game though. It up to you what to do there.

270 win no doubt.you can go from shooting 130 gr.ballistic tips at 'yotes & deer to 150 gr barnes or swift A-frames on elk.

In the last week, I've been qualifying my rifles in .270/.308/.30-06/.375 H&H. I have all shooting under 1 MOA with appropriate handloads. I would go with .270 Win AccuBond 130gr with whitetail, 140gr with mules/elk, .308 Win 150gr w/ whitetail, 165-168gr with mulies and elk, .30-06 168gr with anything but brown bear/moose, .375 H&H with brown, bear moose, .375 H&H with anything I couldn't adequately plan for and be comfortable that good shooting, inherent accuracy of my rifles, my shooting ability would take anything I'm likely to hunt inside of 300 yards. As a personal choice, I will not take a shot at more than 350 yards, because I want to ensure I can make an ethical shot successfully. YMMV, and better shots than me may want to go a different way.

My thoughts,

Cheers,

Harry

If serious about the elk I'd go 30-06.
For 95% deer I'd go .270.
But not a big deal either way.
I don't even know why I clicked on this thread.

Hokie, the stock configuration has a lot to do with the felt recoil. We shot three calibers at the range last month. We had Ruger 77's in 270 win and 7 mm rem mag and a Rem 700 BDL in 280 rem. The 280 kicked harder than the others.

Not enough difference to warrant a choice. I always choose the larger caliber in a close call.

If you hunt mostly deer in open terain I vote for the 270, faster flatter and kills deer just as dead (let's face it they are both a resonable overkill on whitetail) If you hunt in dense woods all that trajectory don't amount to a hill of beans, the 30-06 is the better call because 180-200gr 30 cal bullets trump 130-150gr 270cal bullets any day on elk.
I shoot both, you could not go wrong with either.

I chose 30-06 because I like to practice with M2 ball sometimes and not always shoot $1/round hunting ammo. I like to limit my calibers and already had a few Garands.

I got my brother a .270 since he doesn't shoot much and should be ok with the 2 boxes I got him for the next couple years. The lighter recoil and flat trajectory coupled with the fact that he won't need '06 heavy rounds for the deer he might hunt made the .270 a better caliber for him. The fact that the $180 Stevens 200 Academy special was only for .270 or 7mm-08 had something to do with that choice as well;)

this has been argued a thousand times.

You can't go wrong with either one.

My personal answer is 270, because it shoots flatter and has less recoil, and because of superior sectional density actually performs equal to or better than the 30-06 even though the 30-06 has more energy when comparing standard weights for game (130 grain 270 vs 150 grain 30-06 for deer, 150 grain 270 vs 180 grain 30-06 for elk) As bullet weights go up the 30-06 eventually will overtake the 270, but you need to go up to 220 grain 30-06 for this, which is really only used by those hunting brown bear. If you are planning on hunting brown bear with this rifle, get a 30-06, otherwise get a 270

At long range the 30-06 actually shoots flatter with long range bullets. The .270 shoots flatter by a little bit at close range with lighter bullets. For deer it doesn't matter they both are plenty at reasonable range.

I have owned both in the exact same model rifle, and while both are fantastic I would lean to the 270, the kick was quite a bit less not that the 30-06 is harsh or anything, but the 270 was downright enjoyable to shoot.

.30-06

Wider bullet choice
Cheaper ammo and easier to find should you need a box in a pinch
Time tested
"Flatter trajectory" of the .270 does not matter much when you are talking maybe an inch at average distances

The '06 does everything the .270 can do, and more.
