Granted, I am not a huge fan of the .357 Magnum. In a handgun, it generates a lot of muzzleblast (and a huge fireball from a 2.5" barrel), and a 38 Special +P suits my needs just fine. In a rifle, it just seems a bit anemic.

I have just never really wanted one. Until I came across this:

And, I don't have a rolling block in my collection--yet...

I like 357 Magnum rifles. They have a good balance of power to me. Not quite as much as a 30-30 but enough for deer and anything lesser.

I have kicked myself for 6 years or so for letting a very nice NEF Handi Rifle in 357 go. I told myself at the time that it was about worthless since I had a 30-30, and centerfire isn't legal for small game here, though it is for deer, varmints, and fur bearers.

I do like leverguns though, and Marlin 1894s have always caught my eye.

I ain't done much with it yet, been too busy with other things and guns.

Ruger did the #1 CHP commemorative in .357 mag.
A lesser number were not roll marked.....they fetch a fair bit.
Do pop up on GB once in a while, over $3K.
Thought about getting one and have it reamed to .35 rem.
But not if I'm plunking 3K or more for the donor LOL

Not so.

From a carbine, the factory Federal 158 gr. JSP runs ~ 1840 fps at the muzzle, and ~ 1430 fps/720 ft-lbs at 100 yards. (pistol at contact range)

Fine for up to whitetail.

One of my very first new rifle purchases in 1983 was an H&R Topper in .357 Magnum. It was wicked fun, and more accurate than I anticipated. I had a very compact Burris fixed-power scope mounted on it. Traded it off later for something with more daka, but then about a decade later I purchased a NEF SB2 and had a second .357 Magnum barrel fitted. I still have that one, reamed out to take .357 Maximum, but this rifle gets more use with a custom barrel in .38 Super I had made for me by the late Dick Nickel.

Pistol-caliber single shots make excellent weapons for hunting small game. The Brits used to have a class of rifle known as Rook and Rabbit that regular velocity .38 Special would fit nicely into. Sort of a big bore centerfire substitute for .22 LR. .357 Magnum would probably be a bit too destructive on small game unless downloaded.

I own something else that crudely approximates the Pedersoli offering. It's a Swedish military rolling block that was arsenal converted to 8x58RD, then commercially sporterized before I bought it. I then shortened the barrel and forend to carbine proportions. I been shooting it a lot using a chamber converter in .32 H&R.

This is a long way of saying I'd be tempted by that Pedersoli RB too!

I have a NEF Handi rifle in 357/30-30/.410. Very accurate, but not made any more.
I thought about getting a rolling block, but never did.
Henry makes an affordable single shot.

I’ve had the same experience with mags in max chambers.
Why 38s work so well in a mag, but mags work so poorly in a max is beyond me.

That Chiappa listed above looks real nice, svelte even. 26 inch barrel? With the right load that would be a quiet game getter.

love my traditions outfitter G3 in .357.

I've got the pedersoli Rolling block in 357. Fun rifle. It's not the carbine. Found it at Cabela's of all places. It was an impulse purchase because I didn't have a rolling block and I like 357. Hell I've got a Ruger 77/357 I like a lot too. The usual lever actions from Rossi and Marlin are also in my collection.

.357 out of a rifle approaches .30-30. Pretty versatile for whatever you need a rifle for at iron sights range in most of the country.

Vs a .44 carbine. I have .357s and like them to all heck but in a carbine I am get a .44. The baby roller though is one I could go for if I could find one as they are a bit hard to find.

I got my .357 handgun (Ruger Security Six stainless 4" barrel Hogue grips) because it has all the features you'd pay extra for in a .38 Spl target revolver.
.357 out of my Rossi lever gun surprised me. From my pistol .357 158gr JSP splatted on my 3/8ths inch thick steel swinger. From the 20 inch carbine the same ammo made craters in the steel swinger.

If you can find one, buy it. I have a Henry Single shot in .357, that eats mostly .38 cast loaded in the +P range. It is a HOOT to stretch out and thunk smallish targets at 100-150 yards with significant Kentucky windage applied.

Before deer season it is zeroed with 180 grain .357 XTPs over max H110 and loaned to a local youth hunter. Last year it accounted for 2 large does. Bullet terminal performance was perfect, with sufficient damage to vitals, 1/2 pass through (second was quartering away and hit off-side shoulder) and dead deer within 50 yards. Even with this prickly .357 load, recoil is manageable to pleasant for a small framed 11 year old who thinks a 20 Guage with light loads is stout.

Two here. A Henry single shot and an original 1892 Winchester little brother and I ha rebarreled to 357 back in the sixties when it wasn't a mortal sin to do such things. 24" rifle.

The main reason a .357 mag fired from a .357 Max chamber doesn't do so well in the accuracy department is mainly because the difference in OAL between .357 mag and .357 max is pretty big. On the other hand, the difference between OAL of .38 special and .357 mag isn't nearly as much.

I always thought it would be interesting to ream out the chamber on my .357 mag Rossi 92 to .360 Dan Wesson.
