.38Spl 148 DEWC accuracy troubleshooting

I found 4.0 grains of hp38 to be very accurate with my cast dewc bullets. Unfortunately the security six leads like crazy with uncoated bullets no matter what I do and I need to cast some new dewcs to coat, as all my others are tumble lubed.

Unfortunately the Security Six leads like crazy. . .
Whenever I hear of a Ruger revolver leading, I think undersized cylinder throats. . . every Ruger revolver I own, and all but two Smiths, needed throat honing to match the bore. A couple of the Rugers were crazy undersized; I think I cut 0.003 out of my 45Colt BH cylinder. The two Smiths that didn't need honing were likely worked over before they came to me.

Check it, I'll bet that's your issue.

I had it done, still a problem. Have up and use coated only.

And my next loop of results are promising. In my M10, at 21 yards, with a light roll crimp:
- 3.0gr HP38: 3"
- 3.5gr HP38: 3"
- 4.0gr HP38: 1"
The trend was similar, but not as good in my M19.

Measurements indicate I am seat-sizing .002-.003", so my next batch is loaded in unsized and partially sized brass at the charges above.

Thanks for all the insight!

Good to hear your positive results! :)

Wowza, talk about full charge.
Some of the old manuals were a bit stouter with W-231 than data is today, and yes, they were full power, not light plinkers, still have that particular can full.

These days I use coated or plated 148s and a gentle charge of WST or Competition for light plinkers. No "full charge" WCs anymore.
