Sixgun Nut
The .38-40 is a great cartridge that can't be judged by current anemic factory loads, which are very low pressure in deference to 150yr old blackpowder 1873's. When handloaded to its full standard pressure, it's quite potent. Capable of 180's at 1200fps from revolvers or 1450-1500fps from rifles. Loads that will work just fine in a smokeless 1892. It's a little more trouble than your average straightwall cartridge but with a little lube and a little care, it's an easy cartridge to load for.
With a basic cannelure tool like the Corbin, any jacketed bullet designed for the .40S&W or 10mm becomes available to you. I've tested the 135gr Sierra at over 1600fps and the 180gr Gold Dot at 1470fps out of my 24" Uberti 1873 Deluxe Sporting Rifle with one inch groups with either at 50yds. Still need to test 180gr and 200gr XTP's, as well as the 200gr Beartooth. I received 100rds of Cutting Edge 150gr Raptors yesterday that I'd like to try on whitetail this season.
