April 21, 2004 -- A Turkish ship headed for New York - and stuffed with thousands of Kalashnikov assault rifles and AK-47s - was seized en route in Italy, authorities said yesterday.
The ship's deadly hoard of more than 7,500 terrorist-grade rifles and machine guns worth more than $6 million was discovered illegally hidden under piles of properly labeled arms in several massive cargo containers, Italian officials said.

The ship MS Adnan Bayraktar, which bears a Turkish flag, had come from the Romanian port of Constanta and was on its way to a stopover in New York when the bust was made, the authorities said.

Documents showed the cargo containers were ultimately headed to a large U.S. company based in Georgia.

Officials refused to identify the business, citing security concerns and the ongoing investigation.

"We know that the [ship's] destination was North America, but we don't effectively know if that's where the [suspect] arms were going," one customs official told Italian state television.

The ship's cache of combat-style weapons was uncovered several days ago during a routine customs inspection at the Calabrian port of Gioia Tauro in southern Italy, officials said. They said they didn't reveal the bust at the time because of the continuing probe.

The weapons were confiscated by the Italian authorities because of problems with the ship's customs forms. For example, the arms had been described on some of the forms as "common guns" instead of assault-style.

The smuggled firearms included the lightweight combat Kalashnikov rifles, AK-47 assault rifles and SKA and Mauser rifles, authorities said.

The weapons' bayonets were still affixed to them, as were cartridges that can hold up to 30 rounds, they said.

The AK-47s had been tampered with so they couldn't be rapidly fired, but the modification was one that could easily have been reversed, authorities said.

The assault weapons are a favorite with terrorists: Osama bin Laden sported one in the now-infamous footage of him taken after 9/11.

AK-47s also have been the weapon of choice for some infamous military-minded wackos, such as the teens who shot up Columbine HS in Littleton, Colo., in 1999.

The United States has banned such military-style semiautomatic weapons since 1994. The law preventing them from being manufactured, imported or sold here expires in September. With Post Wire Services

Isint this rich.

cartridges that can hold up to 30 rounds

Wow, is that like the Metal Storm system? So my "low capacity" SKS can now fire 300 rounds before needing a reload? Excellent, life is good!

Well, it looks the supply of SAR-1's and other Romanian AK's is going to be curtailed for awhile. I'd bet this was Century Arm's latest shipment.
Notice the "tampered with to prevent full auto fire".
Still, this illustrates a principle that I've mentioned before-the general public doesn't CARE about the features law. If it looks scary, whether it's pre ban, post ban or a real FA weapon makes no difference to the vast majority of people.

Littleton? I mistakenly (I guess) remember a Hi-Point carbine and a Tec 9 at Columbine in 99. Purdy had the AK in Stockton circa 89 I thought.
Kalashnikov assault rifles and AK-47s
Redundant maybe? False facts? I thought that was a bad thing in journalism.

Whatever happened to the Who, What, When, Where, Why and How? Gone with the wind I gather.

Heh, tamperd with...

7,500 terrorist-grade rifles

However it is an extra $10 for a hand-pick terrorist grade.

Sheesh. Just sheesh.:uhoh:

The editors of that paper need to ride that "journalist" out on a rail. But, sadly, that will not happen.

Too bad the unwashed masses will believe every word.

Where am I going? Why am I in this handbasket?

Wow! These guys don't have an agenda, do they?

I used to chalk crap like this up to sheer ignorance, but it would be virtually impossible to pack that many lies and distortions of fact into such a short article without really working at it. It's scary that there are so many sheeple out there that just eat this kind of stuff up.

The weapons' bayonets were still affixed to them, as were cartridges that can hold up to 30 rounds, they said.

:scrutiny:

Um...cartridges that can hold up to 30 rounds? We need to hunt down the person that wrote this piece of 'news' and educate them on a couple of points.

That is the most pathetic excuse for journalism I have ever read in my entire life.

What is the deal with these high capacity "cartridges"? Do you think they make those for a Mini 14?

What do you expect from journalism ? The editor of USA Today just resigned, the Blair scandal and others at the NYTimes , etc, etc, etc.

OK the rest is spin, drivel, and embelishment. This here is a blatent lie. 9.22R is the law that covers importation and it never expires.

I think the author should have used the words "combat, assault, and terrorist" a few more times. No agenda there.

cartridges that can hold up to 30 rounds

We can all thank this joker for making the average Joe stupider after reading this pile of trash.

The "agenda" of the NY Post is to sell lots of newspapers with bold headlines and overdramatic writing. This article is fairly typical, but in general they don't seem to lean too far left or right, they just go for the big story (kind of like the National Enquirer  ). Last I heard, their strategy works, because they're outselling the NY Times in New York.

But wait, I thought we needed stricter laws to prevent terrorists from shopping at their local gunshow and then shipping assault weapons back home. Now they're importing them to sell to themselves and then export back to their home country? Wow...

LOL, yes that is the single biggest piece of crap article I've seen in awhile. Let's see, is very badly written, poorly researched, and seemingly un-proofread. What a crock of crap. It honestly would not surprise me a bit if a 3rd grader really did write that, it's that bad...

I'm going to go fondle my "Terrorist-grade" weapons now and make sure they aren't getting too unruly in there unsupervised...
