I am big time torn b/n the XD40 sub and the PT145 MP... I just can't decide between the 2... I would like to get a 40 and 45 but only want 1 of the 2 to be polymer... Must be compact.. that is what I want in this next purchase (so avoid the XD45 talk) This will be my "beater gun".. with me in the truck, fishing, hunting, camping, although I take very good care of my firearms, I want one that I want be afraid to knock around a little or get scratched a little or brave the elements with.. more for protection to be with me, and etc... What would you do...

1. Get the PT145 MP... compact and well it is a 45 at a lower price with 10rd cap...save the money to put toward a 40 cal, maybe a Sig, or skip the 40 all together and just get another 45 down the road (love some of Springfield's and Para's but that purchase of a looker piece will be down the road a bit)...

2. Get the XD40 due to quality and sub compact size and durability, and save a little longer and get a 1911 style 45.

3. Get the PT140 MP (save a little money)... and get a 1911 style 45...

What do you think... With the PT140 vs PT 145.. basically same price.. Probably ought to opt for the 45? Is the savings in money on the Taurus worth choosing it over the XD?

I agree option #2, Xd's are awesome and factory mags are very inexpensive, and after markets are even cheaper. Also you can pick up a few extra 16rd mags for the range or if you know thier is something about to go down you can be ready! plus if you look in the right place you can find the xd sub-compact package deal, with holster mag holder and loader. I think you will be very pleased with the xd! Take care!

I'd wait and see if the new 24/7 Pro trigger finds its way to the Millenium Pro series compacts.

I like .40 over .45 in 3" sup-compacts because the 180 gr .40 has the same sectional density as does a 230 gr .45, but the .40 will have about 100 fps more velocity for better pnetration which is IMHO the main problem with CCW sub-compacts. OTOH I see the logic of sticking with a single caliber and since you ultimately want a 1911....

I'd go with the XD over the 24/7, but for a sub-compact I think I'd take the Millenium Pro over the XD sub-compact, especially if the new 24/7 Pro trigger finds its way to the small guns. I'd rate the XD trigger as the best yet on a plastic gun (not counting the Kimber BP plastic 1911s) but I think the Millenium Pros will carry better than the XD sub-compacts. I think it ultimately boils down to what best fits your hand and how you plan to carry/conceal -- I gnerally use either a Kahr PM40 or a S&W Scandium J-frame .357 as CCW.

So I guess I'd vote for option 3. I've a PT145 and its a great little gun for the money, but generally a little big for me to use as CCW.

Thanks for the comments.

Wally-- Isn't the pt140 and pt145 the exact same size?

No the PT145 is a bit thicker and longer in the grip because of the magazine bottom bumper/plate. The 9mm and .40 S&W appear to be the same size.

The Taurus web sight should have the exact dimension.

While unlike many I don't have a problem with Taurus firearms, never having had a bad one myself, in this case I really like the xd's, so that's a toughie. I have two xd's in 9mm and they are my favorite of the polymer guns. Utterly reliable to date, quite accurate, easy take-down--not much not to like there. I'd probably say go xd and get a 1911 in 45, though be warned--seldom can one have just ONE 1911...once the sickness starts, you will find yourself buying another...and another...I'm up to 4 so far...;)

I'd go with the XD also. The sub compact (3") in 40 is my favorite, but as a 'beater' you may want to consider a service model (4") too, they are not that much more to carry or keep in your truck. Lots of holsters available also.

Oh yeah, I'm a Taurus fan too.

I would go with the XD. If you eventually want a 1911, the XD has a very similar grip.

The only other option would be to go Glock (I know, not mentioned). If you want a gun that will take all kinds of crap and come back for more (while staying reliable), it is an obvious choice.

I'll be the first to throw in a wrench........

If you choose the XD for your stated purposes, I would highly recommend you spend a few extra bucks with AJAMES over at the XDForums and have the slide refinished. The factory "brunial" finish is terrible and many have reported speckle-type rust only after a day or two in their vehicles, or left in their holsters, etc etc. I think he only charges $45 or so and he does fantastic work as evidenced by all of the feedback.

I have an XD9 and haven't had any rust show up, but I don't use mine in the environmental conditions you describe.

Having said that, I do not yet own (I will next week) a 24/7 Pro, but at the gun store, it sure looked and felt much better of a finish than my XD. :)

My 2 Cents

I own a Taurus Mil Pro 145 SS. It is a real nice compact gun. Easy to conceal. It shoots great, amazingly accurate for a short barreled auto.
HOWEVER...it is sensative to limp wristing. With a firm grip it shoots fine, but don't lock that wrist and you could experiance a round failing to feed.

I would get the Millennium Pro 145 if I had to have the .45ACP. 10+1 is great, and it has a good size and double strike capability.

If you're acceptable to a .40S&W, I would get the XD-40 in a heartbeat or even an XD-9. The trigger is nice and IMO will probably outlast 2 of the MilPro's.

Those two things said, it boils down to what's more important to you, gun or caliber.

I personally would go option 2.

XD40 sub

Pretty sure if I get the XD in 40, it will be the sub.. just really love it.

Got my XD40 sub earlier this week. Have owned the XD40 Tactical for nearly a year (first plastic gun ever for this 1911 guy). Shot my XD40 for first time yesterday.

Excellent!!

Hope you are just as happy with it

and yes, I did actually give Glock a fair look and even rented one to shoot...no competition, XD40 sub was the clear choice (for me).

Go with the Mil. Pro. PT 140 Great gun I know I have one. The PT 145 is also a good choice for pure knock down power.

I would either get the stainless or the hard chrome finish from Tripp.

I've had both and I loved them both. My XD was a 40 service model and it was just too big for daily IWB carry. It was a great firearm and I regret selling it and plan on a 40 tac. in the near future. I sold it to finance a a dedicated ccw weapon. I wanted a DA only with a manual safety and the PT40 Mil Pro was everything I wanted. It too is a great firearm. It doesn't like 165 grn reload range crap but its never even bobbled with 180grn and up. Shoots very nice and it conceals really well. The stainless finish is very nice and it still looks brand new after 8 months or so of daily carry...either in a Tucker Texas Heritage IWB or in the car console. The fininsh on the XD was the one thing I disliked about the XD. The black whatever you call it finish is very weak and within a few weeks shooting ipsc production it had significant holster wear. The one upside is a bottle of cold blue gets it looking pretty decent again. So, if you're going to carry concealed a lot I'd get the Pt140 or 145...make sure it the Millennium Pro. If its for car and outdoor belt carry then I guess I would go with the XD. Either way you will be happy and the quality and function of the firearm.

My 2 cents. i owned a PT 140. It Kb'ed on me. Taurus did replace the frame, as it was cracked badly. Never sent a letter or explaination as to why it blew apart. I sold it and bought a diffrent gun. I steer clear of an Taurus that hasn't had some time on the market. Also the slide started to wear and show pitting after a year of use. The bluing wasn't all that great IMO.
I got to fire a XD .40 compact. Nice gun, less felt recoil that my PT, better controls.
