.40 S&W (Best gun for the money?)

Get an HK USP. It was my first and only handgun for almost a decade!

Apparently, there are so many morons out there. People who have been carrying Glocks for 15 years have had AD's. Sadly people have died. How much would it cost to Glock to add a decocker or at least change the takedown procedure like the Springfield XD which at least forces you to lock the slide. But the company doesn't care as long as it is making money.

Its not a design problem, its a user error problem! If people would follow the 4 rules, and make sure the dang thing is unloaded before cleaning those AD/NDs would NEVER happen in ANY situation

If I read it correctly, it is your first handgun?

Personally I'd forgo the .40 and get a 9mm so you can afford to shoot a lot more to become proficient. Ammo prices seem to vary but where I'm at, .40 is typically about 30% more, sometimes as high as 50%. Best to mail order, but sometimes those occasions crop up where more shooting opportunities crop up than was anticipated and you have to make a local purchase.

If you have a $600 budget, I'd head over to http://www.summitgunbroker.com/Beretta_Cougar.html . Spend $300 for the firearm, then spend the other $300 on ammo.

The Beretta's rotating barrel will tame the recoil of the .40 somewhat. If you aren't interested in a Beretta and want something like a Glock or Sig, they have some used of those as well.

If you like the idea of the Beretta, but just gotta have new, then check out the Stoeger Cougar, same gun for about $400.

All in all, a lot of good suggestions you can't go wrong with in this thread.

Good luck!

Two great guns and great prices are the SigPro 2022 and FNP. Two very nicely made, shooting, priced guns that are relative sleepers. You could easily pick up BOTH for the price...

I have to reccomend my FNP-40

1500 rnds, no problems. Used and abused, its the best $400 I've ever spent.

CZ-75B. It's built like a tank and the ergonomics fit me perfectly. Never a hiccup with any ammo including the chepest Commie junk. Find something that fits you. All the above mentioned guns(SIG,HK,S&W.SA.etc) will serve you well if they fit you.

Bud's has Bersa Thunder 40s for $360 delivered: http://www.budsgunshop.com/catalog/product_info.php/cPath/21_178/products_id/15062

I just love my Bersa 380, and I haven't read any complaints about their bigger guns either.

I would NOT RECOMMEND any pistol that requires you to pull the trigger for field strip. Too many accidental discharges. It is easy to blame people for not checking the chamber but one single mistake and your life is never the same again.
Two mistakes.
1. Not checking the chamber, and
2. Not pointing the gun in a safe direction

You have to REALLY try to pull the trigger on a loaded chamber when you don't intend to.

This is a non-issue, IMO. :)

HK if you can afford it. Sig 229 is right up next to it. For less money and still a great package, M&P. XD is fine, and the Glock series is okay if you're not going to have really high round counts. Of the Glocks, I'd go with the G23 or G35.

As to weapons jamming, there's no such thing as one that never ever will: unless of course you plan to never feed it or function it. It's never a question of jamming, it's a question of whether or not you can overcome the jam quickly and consistently. No gun is human fool proof. People have incredible ability to screw things up. Which brings me to my next point:

If you are complaining about accidental discharges, you need to rethink the terms you are using. Discharges are rarely "accidental". They are nearly always "negligent". If you don't have the sense to unload and then re-check a weapon before disassembly, then you should not have ANY gun, not even a revolver or single-shot breech loader. Handling a weapon requires a serious approach, not a flippant, casual, or careless one.

If you aren't comfortable with a weapon's features, then fine, buy something else. Everybody has an opinion or set of "feelings" about stuff, otherwise all guns would be the same (and who knows how that would be). But let one thing be clear: DESIGN, FUNCTION, AND FEATURES WILL NEVER TAKE THE PLACE OF SERIOUS SAFETY AND TRAINING.

So quit blaming the dang guns. It's usually the idiot holding them. Lest I seem hypocritical, this is coming from someone has taken the idiot path before in the distant past and will never do so again....

love my S&W 4006!

I've had a S&W 4006 stainless for many years, ex police gun. Quiet, accurate, low recoil, what more could you want? It's rather heavy for CC, so I'm looking to get an XDm .40 because I've got an XD .45 which is a sweet gun, but I really love S&W .40.

glock or xd would be great. you will have a few sizes to chose from. i've also owned a beretta 96 that was amazingly accurate and fun to shoot. a sig 226 or 229 can be found at great prices, like this one here. http://www.summitgunbroker.com/Sig_229R_.html

i've found that glock and beretta and sigs have a fatter grip and xds fit me best, but i've adapted to shooting them all.

Another vote for the 4006. Lots of used ex-police trade-ins out there, Summit Gun Broker, CDNN, etc. Can be had for less than $400...

I love to read all of the Glock bashing, especially the post that stated "Glock only if you don't plan to put a lot of rounds through it." What a joke!!

If you want a good .40, by all means, try out a few before making a decision. You've been given several good recommendations; however, only you can decide what best suits you.

I own both a XD-40 and a Glock 23. I personally perfer the Glock. It is a little smaller all the way around and and just fits my hands better. I think you would be happy with either one. IMO, 40 S&W is one of the best all round pistol calibers.

yup. we all have recommendations... but YOU alone has to find what you shoot best and what fits your hand. otherwise, glock, cz, beretta, smith, it don't matter as long as it goes BANG!

I really like my CZ 75B Single Action .40S&W, but for all around I don't think you'll find too much better than the Springfield XDm.

i like my 4 inch xd i cant speak to the other as i have not had much trigger time with any of them exept my xd jmho

The Tally so far

Thank you all for your inputs...The results thus far:

Springfield XD.......17
Glock 23..............13
S&W M&P............11
CZ 40..................9
CZ 75..................8
Sig P229..............8
Walter P99...........6

The S&W voters had the most to say (great details and lots of passion for their gun), with the XD owners also very informative. The glock owners mostly offered the name with the exception of arguing over accidental discharge, didnt comment "why" they were so great. (Glocks seem like the MLB players being investigated for steroids, either you love em blindly or your dont give em any credit....I think the truth is somewhere in the middle)

My gut is saying S&W or XD at this point, but I still got time to decide.
Thank you all again for your inputs, much appreciated. ( I didnt include 10 other guns voted for since they only had 1-3 votes each)
