Hello all,

Great forum, info is very helpful. I'm considering one of the above, but can't decide. The P99 feels the best in the hand by far, followed by the 90-two. My only concern is how light it is. Who has experience with these 3? My main question is how different is the felt recoil between them? Significant or minor? Will be a range/HD weapon. Thanks.

The P99 is a terrific pistol, I prefer the AS trigger 9mm version and haven't tried the Walther in .40.

P99 will probably have the most muzzle flip of the three due to light weight + high bore axis. Beretta should be the mildest shooting...

If you're worried about recoil, the Beretta PX4 is a very good choice, or maybe stick with 9mm?

As a former owner of an excellent P99QA in .40, I will tell you that the recoil is fairly brisk. I can only compare it to a .40 P2000, a Beretta 8000L 9mm, a .40 CZ Rami, and the new 9mil P99c I bought to replace it; I preferred all the other guns recoil-wise (only!). I did like the shootability better then a ltwt commander in .45 though.

It is a GREAT pistol, but comparatively the other options were better to shoot - offering faster easier follow-up shots. Buying it in 9mm would be a no brainer...I Love my P99c in 9mm, and don't mind the P2000 in .40.

My vote is for the P99. Its just as reliable as the XD and maybe a little more accurate. The beretta is just a 92fs with some plastic (and I do mean plastic) surgery.

Put 100 rounds through each. Remember how your groups looked and how your wrist felt afterwards.

I'm an XD-40 fan myself (fairly recent convert) but I really like the 99 as well

Beretta mod 96 is 40 S&W not the 92. if you plan to carry the 96 is big not easily consealed. I have a 96 I like the pistol had the action worked on by C&S Shop only complaint if you reload it throws brass in every direction

I am torn on this issue. I love the XD but I really love the beretta. Asking a question like this is just plain wrong.

Beretta 92= Super reliable, Accurate, Easy to work on if needs be, but it is a little big for concealed carry. But it is oh so pretty.

Springfield XD= All of the above except not as big and not as pretty.

If you must force me to choose than I guess it would be the XD, because it is easier to carry as a CCW.

The P99 I can't really make a judgment on because I have not shot one enough that I would be able to give it a fair review.

Edited because I forgot to answer a question:

I have shot both the 96 and the XD 40 and I seem to shoot a little better with the XD40. At least to me it seems to have a nice soft recoil which is easy to recover from. If recoil is what you are concerned about than maybe look at getting a 96 Brigadier Model instead of a plain Jane 96 FS.

Wow,

Thanks for all the help. Those that have shot the P99 have confirmed what I suspected, that it would be quite snappy due to the weight. The thing just feels so darn perfect in my hand. I love the XD, but it really isn't as comfy as the 99. The 90-two is a bit heavier......:banghead: Uggg....

Already have a 9mm, so dropping to that isn't really an option.

E5, While weight is a factor, remember that gun fit is also a major factor in percieved recoil. A light gun that fits you well will feel better to shoot than a heavier one that fits you poorly. I'd invest a little range time with each gun and see hoe they do shooting. Also, to clarify for some other folks who have posted, the Beretta 90two is a new pistol, different from the old 92 and 96. http://www.beretta.com/index.aspx?m=74&idc=2&ids=60

Solid answer

The damn thing (P99) does fit my hand like a glove. What the heck, I'm gonna give it a try. Found a new one being blown out for $425, so if I hate it I won't lose much at all.

probly the p99, it's got almost everything you could ever expect from a pistol.
also, i'm not sure if they still make them, but you can upgrade a p99 with a bar-sto .357 barrel which makes it all the more accurate.

I have a friend who I talked into buying an SW99 in .40 new. After 500 rounds in a years time I discovered a small part on the inside had cracked. I was days away form buying one in .45. I admit I loved that gun, still do, and the fit in hand was quite nice. I ended up with an XD .45 and have put 700 through it in 3 weeks no problems. Fits nice in my hand but not quite as comfortable as the 99.

Also want to mention the 99 did perform and shoot w/ no problems even with the crack.

Well

I went with the P99. Can't get over how good it feels. It's the AS trigger model. I think I did pretty good at $425. Can pick it up in a week, will report back after I've blown thru a few hundo rounds.:D

XD-40!!!

I would have said walther, but I believe the P99 was just " modified" to shoot .40 s&w, and I don't like when pistols are not designed from the ground up to handle a certain round. IMO the beretta is too large for concealment. I choose the XD-40, closest thing to a GLOCK, but was actually built to handle .40, and 357sig.

Congrats man! You'll love it - I think you made a fine choice.

I'll second that. You went thru the evaluation of your prospects and chose well. Your P99 foremost has a track record or reliability and durability, like many other good choices; The P99 seperated itself from the other options because it fit your hand best, which is the most important thing after reliability. Getting a great price is just icing on the cake. Congrats on the new pistol. Remember to post pics and a range report for us when you're able. :D

I shoot the Walther P99AS and it is one of my favorite handguns. While the 40SW cal recoil is a little snappy, compared to the Beretta, its very manageable and oh so accurate. I had a Beretta 96 in INOX, a used police gun, that was my bedside handgun for years. It was smooth shooting, accurate, but pretty big and heavy for anything but the bedside table. Its new owner uses it open carry in the woods. I guess it would depend on what the intended use was.

The nicest 40 S&W I've owned or just had a chance to shoot is the Beretta 96 - very nice gun IMO....transpose that to today, I guess the 90-two winds :D

All the choices are good overall.

All the different handguns mentioned in this tread are good overall. I like the XD's myself because i'm left handed and they work well for me. It's hard to find an easier gun to break down and clean.

XD .40 Subcompact, brisk but deadly

:)
