I am currently thinking about trading a break action 410ga shotgun for a repeater or double barrel of some sort. Would it be a good idea to search for a 28ga instead of staying with a 410?

I usually just grab my 20ga for clays or any shooting if I do not want to shoot my 12ga. I feel that the 28ga may be more useful for clays than the 410 currently is for me. The only time that the 410 gets pulled out is for teaching a new person to shoot, meaning that I only keep a box of rounds for it at any time.

Unless you're not concerned with factory ammo in the $10-15 a box range or reload, I would recommend staying with the 20ga.
That being said, I did some impromptu clay shooting this afternoon with my 410 Stoeger Condor O/U. I had a blast and yes, I reload. My friend uses a Charles Daly 28ga auto, and I really like that 28ga shell. He reloads too.

Last I looked the prices for 28ga and 410 were about the same and i do plan on reloading within the next 2 years after i get out of college so cost of shells is not a huge issue

The 28 is a joy to shoot - it packs 50% more payload than the 410, so for actually teaching someone to shoot, it is a better choice. Cost-wise regarding guns, the Browning BPS is about the best deal out there. I have a Remington 1100 - recoil is practically nil, but it costs more than the pump.

Moving up to O/U's and SxS - you can find great 28 gauge TARGET-grade O/U's from Browning, Beretta, Geurini, among others. New run around $3,000, used can be had for about half. FIELD grade guns are a little cheaper, and lighter. CZ and some other brands offer inexpensive SxS and O/U. If all you are going to do is shoot a box or two, that's one thing. The jury, especially on pother shotgun forums, is still out on their reliability and ability to remain trouble free for a long time.
