.44 Mag light loads

I am no expert but I reload a hornady 300 grain XTP loaded with 15 and 1/2 grains ofHogdon LIL'Gun shotgun powder.

I found this recipe in the reloading handbook. They suggest 17 grains but i wanted a little lighter load because i was shooting a 5.5 barrel on a Vaquero. I dont have a velocity rating for you. But I can tell you this for certain.

The round is hitting just as well as 240 gr factory load hollow points and does just as much damage to a watermelon stuck on a 2x4 wrapped tightly with saran wrap. This is what i use to test rounds.

I have less recoil but i seem to be getting great accuracy and much more trauma to the target at 50 yards havent shot it at 75 yards yet but plan too soon.

If anyone else tries this loadout please let me know your thoughts

. I really don't want to push these at magnum velocities, more like a hot .44 special.

Powders on hand in quantity are:
800X
SR-4756
SR-4759
PB
Unique
Bullseye
H110
Universal Clays
SR-7625
Clays
Green Dot
PB, Unique, Bullseye, Universal, & Green dot should work.

When I get done with my .38 Specials and .357's I am going to start with the .44's with 6 grains of universal behind the 250 grain cast bullets I have. Load a few and chrono them to see what I am getting. It might be a while before I get to the .44's. I have about 1500 of the .38's and about 1000+ of the .357's. I only load a couple hours a week when I get a chance between all my other responsibilities.

Red Dot

Red Dot works fine for me in 45ACP & 38 Special target loads.I have loaded some 44 Mag loads with 6 grains behind a 240 LSWC that I have not yet tried.Based on it's performace previously, I expect this load with Red Dot to be mild and accurate in my sons 71/2 inch Super Blackhawk.Bullseye from your list should work equally well.

CraigC - 10.0gr Unique for 1100-1200fps from a revolver or 1450fps from a rifle.

I can vouch for this after test firing my 9.5 g Unique and 240 Magtech SJSP. It was much more gentlemanly than the commercial REAL .44 Magnum that I shot afterward.
