I am finally getting a Ruger Super Redhawk in 44 Mag. I need load info on a good mild load with 240 LSWC. The powders I have are W231, Unique, H110 and Power Pistol. Any suggestions. I have 4 loading manuals but they are at home.
Im using 6.6grn of W231 under 240grn WC and a Super blackhawk. just over 800 RPM This works in my gun dont know about yours.. My son shoots it he is 12 (cant keep enough loaded for him and me too..
I'm using 5 gr. W231 and Lasercast 240 gr. lswc for indoor shooting. I'm using it in two revolvers, a SW 629 (iron sights) and a scoped Ruger Super Redhawk. For reasons I can't explain, the round used with the S&W is signficantly more accurate than the Ruger, shooting both with sandbags.
A little mystery that needs solving.
My standard 250 LSWC load for nigh-on 40 years is 10 gr of Unique for about 1000 fps out of my Super Blackhawk (bought at the Osan Rod & Gun Club in Korea when I was rooting around on the DMZ with 2ID in the early 70s). I am still shooting some of that brass, too - bell minimally, and keep an eye on them for splits. You don't need severe crimps with it, either - just straighten the bell or taper crimp. I size my slugs (RCBS & Lyman 250s) at 429 and 430 and they both do well. I have used 296 with superb results for full power loads with both cast and jacketed slugs - 2400 is a little dirty, though accurate for sure. I have AA9, H110, etc etc, just haven't found anything better than 296 - check the velocities vs pressure on the pantheon of powders, and you'll see.
Getting the itch... may have to head out to the shop...
Cheers,
Maj Dad
Unique is just very hard to beat in mild to mid range loads in 44 Mag, especially with lead bullets. Some gripe about it not being very clean burning, but it "all comes out in the wash", so to speak. It's always easy on a hot summer day at the range to know what a fellow shooter is burning in his guns by looking at his arms. Those that have been there will know what I'm talking about. There are so many good reduced loads in a variety of loading manuals using Unique. You're bound to find one that you like. After all, it ain't named Unique for nothing.
I go one step further in that the local range limits us to 1000 FPS and to avoid problems I use 44 SPL brass and loads for use there. that will help you from using a full house load by mistake. That said once fired 44 SPL brass is real cheap and available almost all the time on Gunbroker. I also use hard lead SWC bullets for the scoring aspect when competing in a match.
