Not sure if this belongs here, or in gunsmithing, or in rifles.
I'm looking at the three .30-06 cases that I picked up at the Memorial Day parade today (Duty. Honor. Country.) And I wonder if anyone has ever cut .30-06 off at 1.95", kind of like a .44 Automag but a lot longer, and chambered a .43 or .44 rifle for the resulting cartridge? It should be able to handle big blunt-nosed solid bullets and a chamber pressure > 50000 psi easily. But it would have to headspace on the case mouth, and I don't think rifles ever do that. The bullets would have to be seated long enough to prevent it from chambering in a .30-06 or a 8mm Mauser to prevent a disaster.
Am I just reinventing a rimless (and impractical) .444 Marlin?
