.45 defensive loads

Federal Mil-Spec 230 FMJ at 850 FPS

Platform is a H&K USP Compact.

In .45 ACP FMJs rarely travel completely through the human body. Why would I want to cut down on the penetration even less?

Hollow points seem to be either a spectacular success or failure. FMJ offers consistently marginal performance.

230 Grain Golden Sabre's in a SA GI. They work fine for me. I tried +P loads and didn't care for them with a 16lb spring. I also used the 185 grain Golden Sabre's without any problems. WWB 230 grain for range use.

I use a 230 rnfp at 850 FPS with a great big metplat.

Is this a commercial load or do you load your own? If you load yourself what cast do you use?

The hundgun hunting guru's around here also load this type of bullet in 44's and 454's to hunt some pretty nasty stuff.

We are not allowed to hunt with auto pistols, but if it kills a warthog, it must me good.

I want to try and load some of my own defence loads. I have been using corbon 230gr rounds for carry up to now.

thanks

Yes this is a reload. I use Bearcreek 230 RNFP Drylubed bullets.
over 5.4 grains of Win 231. VERY accurate and hits like the hand of God.

Thanks bigjim

Just one more question.

What kind of velocities are you loading to? We have only the local Somchem powders here, MP200. It is quite fast buring specificaly for hanguns. I will take that as a start and work for a load that works well in my 1911.

it appears a 230gr @ 850ft/s is what most use. hv, i can shoot 200gr swc @ 800ft/s very quickly and accurately. am i compromised if these are used defensively?

Hornancy 185 gr XTP over 5.5 grs of Bullseye. Blows a nice big hole in everything I shot at.

I may move to 230 gr hardball or some sort of non-hollowpoint ammo in the future. Further testing will be required, but for now, I'm pretty happy with the above.

I'm interested in that Magsafe stuff, but I just can't see paying $2 a round to test it enough. I'd want at least 100 rounds to test. From some of the online tests I've seen penetration isn't too good. That said, it fragments nice and MAY be more effective than we think. I guess I like stuff that's been proven over many years.

230 grain Speer Gold Dot, Federal Hydrashok or Winchester SXT.

All are excellent. The United States of America has perfected 230 grain .45 loadings. This is one thing we have gotten right.

No! In fact I feel a SWC, especially a TMJ SWC in the 185 to 200 grain range loaded at moderate velocities would be the ideal defensive round. It would have nearly the penetration of ball ammo, but with a sharp edge to actually cut a hole as opposed to just pushing flesh out of the way. I just cant figure out why SWC are so expensive? They shouldn’t be any more difficult to manufacture and load than FMJs.

Dan

Dan 45 SWC probably cost more because I don't think there that is a big market for them in factory loads.
Probably most of the SWC shooters load their own.

My standard 45 reload is a 200 gr lead SWC.
Very simple and cheap to reload and very accurate.

I don't use them for my defense round but if I wanted to use a non JHP round I would choose the SWC before a JRN bullet.

Years ago back in Maryland there was a policeman shot with a single 45 SWC. He "bled out" very qiuckly.

it's good to see confidence in the lswc. i happen to be near a small remanufacturing company with very reasonable prices on ammo that has not failed me in several thosand rounds. even with this track record, i'm still not sure about reliability compared to factory ammo; but i really enjoy shooting the stuff. ron

Your probably correct. Simple supply and demand. Demand will probably never be that high either since they probably cause many older pistols to choke. I have to admit I would prefer a SWC to a FMJ for defensive purposes. I actually purchased a used reloading press, about 2 years ago but never had a place to set it up. It’s oiled up and wrapped up in a big garbage bag in my grandmothers garage right now. Someday soon I’m going to crank that thing up.

rjk2475: I don’t think I would ever carry reloaded ammo unless it was my own. If you really like what he’s selling you, duplicate it your self with a cheap reloading set up for carry; then use his for practice.

The ONE time they ABSOLUTELY had to have terminal ballistics as advertised, Fed 230grn HydraShok let me down. Luckily the other party decided he didn't want to play anymore.

230grn Speer Gold Dots +P is what I finally settled on. Glock 30 platform.

185gr +P Golden Saber they function in all 4 of my 45's:

G30
Kimber Custom CDP II
S&W 4563TSW
S&W CS45

And will test it on the S&W 4506 I am picking up next week.

But in my humble opinion I don't think the light and fast verses the heavy and slow is that big a deal as long as you use at least a 185 gr bullet. I still think it would be a most unpleasent experience to be on the receiving end.
