I know this debate has been done to death, but I have a couple of different insights/questions here, that are not a normal part of the discussions. I fully believe that with modern defensive ammo, that these two cartridges are very similar, when used on two legged varmints. Please let me know what you think of the following.

In a SHTF or TEOTWAWKI situation, how much defensive ammo do you have, compared to your "practice" hard ball ammo? If you were forced to use your supply, and not buy any more, it's possible then your modern defensive ammo could be completely used up, leaving you with nothing but hard ball for a long time. In this case, wouldn't the 45 come out much better on stopping power?

Now, what about 4 legged varmints? I live and play in an area where there are things like mountain lions and black bears (usually small). This is the situation I'm a little fuzzier on. Ideally I would carry a much larger revolver(.357, .44, .45), but sometimes, I have to carry what I've got with me. Would a 9mm be as effective as a 45 against a mountain Lion? How about the bear?

thanks

I have an XDm in 45. I was just wondering what other thought about my reasonings. If it was just for SD in town, I'd carry a 9.

I don't recognize the conundrum as a specifically .45/9mm issue.

Seems a fella could plug in any two calibers he has on hand with the same particulars;

.38-9mm
.357-.40
.44-.41
Most any otherwise debated calibers that happen to be on hand in quantity.

Really not a ballistic issue as stated but rather use/supply issue.
