4F Pyrodex

Got some today...was the only kind the Store had...


Pyrodex has nothing about any 4F on their Website.


Is this ONLY for priming Flintock Pans?

Or, is it alright for using in Cap and Ball Revolvers, or in re-loading for easrtwhile BP era Metallic Pistol Cartridge Revolvers?

Loads are specified in the Lyman Black Powder Handbook copyright 1975 to include ffffg BP carges if desired.
You are correct ffffg BP is primarily for Flintlock Pan Priming...

Are you sure it is 4F PYRODEX or 4F Goex? The Hodgden Pyrodex P is about as fine of a grind as FFFFg but is harder to ignite and much more compressible. If there's a 4F Pyrodex they must have just started making it as I have not heard of any Pyro other than P, RS, and Select. (I'm not counting the solid sticks of Pyro)

I have never heard of 4f Pyrodex and can see absolutely no use for it. I have looked in all of my black powder books and can find no reference to 4f Pyrodex in any of them. 4f black powder is intended for ONLY priming flintlock pans. Since Pyrodex is not suitable for use in any flintlock guns, I cannot imagine them making 4f powder. If they have started making 4f Pyrodex, my question would be "Why????"

I apologise..!


I had the clear image in my mind of the label saying "4F"...

Unpackaging the items today, I see it as being 'Pyrodex P'


When the salesman was showing me what few things they had...the Bottle of Black Powder he was emphacising, did say '4F' and was BP and not Pyrodex...then, the Pyrodex was elected, and somehow I'd got the labels' designations transposed.

Salesman was even saying he uses the 'Pyrodex 4F' for his Cap and Ball shooting, and has been very happy with, and I said "Alright, I'll get one of those then...", and I think that was what goofed up my image-memory into a transposition...Lol...

And...Mystery 'Solved' now...


This was 'Bass Pro Shops'...wonderful Store...nice sales people...but lots of daylight on the shelves where Powders and Primers would have been...so...was not much to chose from for the time being.

Pyrodex P is good stuff,if a little lacking in ''poo''. I prefer Triple Seven as a pistol powder,if I am at the store.Usually I just wait until my club buys some Goex,and get the real stuff,but I'm feeding quite a few muzzle loaders now,so sometimes,I run out.

My original thought was to get some '777' (done)...some 'Swiss,3F,BP(pending)...some suitable Pyrodex (done)...and some 3FGoex (pending)...


And...try them each out and see...


These being for my Cap and Ball Revolver(s), and, for re-loading .38 S&W and .38 Special Cartridges.

You will find the Pyro P to be much more compressible (spongy without the rebound). I found I could fill the chambers chuck full and still ram a ball ontop of the pyro. You do need to compress it to get good ignition. If you don't ram the ball firmly on top of it you will gat a bunch of paBOOMs instead of the nice BOOM!. There will be a split second delayed ignition if not packed firmly.

Yeah...years ago I re-loaded fifty or so .38 Specials...and, did not compress the Pyrodex, though filled the Cases to where the base of the Bullet would be touching it...and, these were rather '"Whoooosh!'-like, or 'Whoom!', and not much of a 'Boom'...
