If I'm shopping around, I've seen the Bushnell tactical and elite lines, Burris MTAC, and Nikon M-223. I'm wanting to stay at or preferably below 250 for price, with a lower profile scope like the ones mentioned above. Any thoughts, or even better, experience with one? I don't really care about variable zoom.

I had a Nikon M-223 on a 300 Blk AR for a while and liked it. I decided to try an Eotech so the M-223 is now waiting for another rifle project to put under it.

I have a Nikon Monarch African 1-4x20 that is currently on a 9.3x62. While it is not tacti-cool, I think it would make an excellent AR optic, and have read of several people using it for that purpose. I picked mine up for $248 from SWFA using their price match feature, but they usually run closer to $270 - $280.

If you don't mind having a buffalo silhouette on the side of a scope on your AR, I don't think you'll find a tougher, clearer scope for the price.

I'm using a 1-4X leupold VX-1 for $199. The VX-2 is a step up, but I'm pleased with what I have for the money. I really like the Leupolds because of the much lighter weight and much more forgiving eye relief compared to ther brands. About 8 oz. with almost 5" of eye relief. In my opinion a fixed 4X is too much for most uses. I like the idea of something around 2X or even less with the option to go higher if needed.

If I were set on a fixed power I'd go with the Leupold 2.5X at just about $270. They make 2 versons a standard at 8 oz and a Lightweight at 6 oz. About the same weight as many red dots.

Nikon p223

I bought one of the new Nikon P223 3-9x40 scopes. Based on the ProStaff series, they have upgraded reticles and turrets. About $200. They also have a 3x version for about $170.

I have a Nikon P223 3x on my Daniel Defense, started out with a 3-9 version but for my needs I liked the fixed 3 better. Couldn't be happier with it, picked it up online for $150......... very clear/sharp view, easy to pick up and doesn't lose zero. Can't ask for more.......

I really like the 4x or less with extended eye relief on AR's..
the EER puts the scope forward of the charging handle and the low power usually has better field of view

Thanks for the info guys, really appreciate it. With the Nikons and Leopolds (never heard anything but good about either), where exactly have you bought them? BTW picked up my first AR today, finally made the cross from the AK platform. Got an M&P 15. Haven't shot it yet, but I'm a fan already.

I got mine from Amazon:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003G5OJXU/ref=olp_product_details?ie=UTF8&me=&seller=

Though when I got it, it was from Amazon directly, and I got free 2 day shipping with my prime membership- total with the M233 mount, I paid US$318.94.

That was last October, and it seems prices have gone up a bit.

My only complaint with it ( other than that 4x is not quite enough at 100 yards for my aging eyes- no fault of the scope!) is that the 'point blank' reticle has a center dot that covers 2 MOA.

I have a Nikon Monarch African 1-4x20 on my 3 gun AR. I love it. It has nice covered turrets, easy to focus, very clear glass, great eye relief. I've had it for a couple of months. It has held zero thru several hundred rounds, 3 trips to the range and a 3 gun match. It replaced a Weaver 1-3x classic. The Nikon is a much better scope.

You can find the Nikon Monarch African 1-4x20 for $250. I got mine from Primary Arms. PA is out of stock now.

I just put a Nikon P223 3X on my 300 blackout it's a sweet little scope. The Spot On software on Nikons website is a big plus.

Bg, Soem great idea's here, I have heard about a number of guys using the MONARCH African on their AR. Never a complaint and I think the logo is pretty darn cool anyway!

A few question's you need to ask yourself are, How far do I want to shoot this rifle? Will I only be shooting at paper target's or reactive target's at different distances as well? Do I want to predator hunt and again, distance comes into play, how far might my shot's be, will they have to be quick because of the terrain/brush? YOu have the first question down, price. I know we can find something that will work for you. If you are staying inside of 200 yards, the MONARCH 1-4 Point Blank Reticle can be found in your price range. The P-223 3-9 BDC 600 will let you reach out and touch about anything you want. Especially when you use Nikon's Spot On Ballistic Program to really dial in your scope, rifle and ammo.

If you have more question's please feel free to drop me a note. Many of the guy's here can also give you some great info especially about what worked for them and why.

I regularly shoot 300 yards with my Nikon Monarch African 1-4x20 with ease. I would be ok shooting it 400 yards. My scope has the german #4 reticle. I don't like the busy reticles.

Looking at this Nikon Prostaff 2-7x. I have an M&P with a 16" barrel and a front sight attached to the gas block, i.e. it's not a folding sight. The rifle already has a picatinny top on the receiver, do I need any kind of spacer special mount to avoid interference from my front sight in the scope picture?

Also @bman, the MagPul sights that came with the rifle are good and durable, but not terribly precise, although they are very quick to aqcuire. They remind me more of an AK with the thickness of the front blade, but I like them for close up. I'm looking for a 200-400 yd scope, but at that range I'm not going to be doing snap shooting, I'll be taking my time more. I want to be able to hit paper plates at 400 yds with some practice. Right now the price point and good reviews of the Prostaff are appealing.

Get one of the scope ring mounts that shift the scope forward on the rifle. Both Burris (P.E.R.S. or something like that) and Nikon make one. Others probably do as well.

You run out of rail on the receiver trying to get the scope far enough forward using standard rings. These mounts will have the proper height that no spacer is required.

I am not sure how they would work with the fixed sights though. Non of my scoped AR have iron sights on them.

b., Using the M-223 2-8 I have hit 10 inch steel plates to 600 yards. Granted, my older eye's preferred the 3-12 M-223. I think that with you wanting to shoot to 400 yards the P-223 3-9 would be the best choice for you. You could step up and look at a PROSTAFF 4-12 BDC which you could then dial into your shooting style. If you can remove the front sight I would. If not, once you get past 2-3 magnification the front sight is not visable anymore. Check out NIkon's M-223 AR Mount also. It is a quality 1 piece aluminum mount that will serve your M&P very well.

b., Feel free to keep the question's coming, I am happy to help however I can.

I am not sure how they would work with the fixed sights though.

There's different heights that'll give lower 1/3 co-witness or true co-witness. This will also change as you turn up the power on the scope. With a 1-4, I see the front sight on 1 x, but it's nowhere to be seen on 4x. I don't think I've ever looked through either of my 1-4's on 2x or 3x.

i dont know if they still make this but the bushnell banner 1.75 to 4 power is wide angle and at lower power works with both eyes open. no problem mounting this with fixed front sight use medium to low rings and a 3/4 inch riser on the flat top. it has long eye relief i think six inches so the scope can be mounted forward of the charging handle good field of view all for around 80 dollars and has a nice circle around the cross hairs that helps with fast target pick up cheap but does the job and no issues with it in 10 years.

My absolute favorite budget compact scope was the Sightron SII Big Sky 1.25-5X20. Although they quite making them, you may be able to find one used. If you can, grab it. My second favorite is the Nikon African with the covered turrets.

One of my AR-15 rifles wears the excellent Leupold FXII 4X33 scope. i hunt with that rifle; the Leupold is very good in low light: Much better than a 4X scope with a 20mm objective.
