CDNN has a few S&W 5.45 uppers for sale last I checked. Go for it, if I could afford an AR, I would get it.

Not a problem, just you have to clean. The 5.45 you see for cheap is corrosive. The AR tends to throw a whole bunch of gas back into the action (if it is not a piston upper), so thorough cleaning is a must.

I'm the happy owner of a S&W 5.45 upper. I ran 300 rounds of Bulgy 7n6 through it last weekend. I have ~2K rounds total through it. It's had zero issues when mated to a lower with a RRA two stage trigger. I use old fashoned USGI 30 round mags with the old style black followers and then only load in 25 rounds.
I'm amazed at the accuracy of this upper with $0.12/round 7n6. It will regularly shoot tighter groups with 7n6 than my other standard CL 5.56 rifles and Russian commercial ammo.

I have the Model 1 7.62x39 and have only shot Tula 154gr sp through it. Because this weapon is for hunting pigs and not so much for range duty I probably do not have 500 rounds down the tube and most of that was to zero the Eotech. I like the weapon and the round. Take a 55gr 223 and figure almost 3 times the weight with the 154gr. I pop pigs with both but if the hunt is going to be conducted in an area where I know most shots will be taken at 100 yards or less then I prefer the 154 grainers.....Both work but I like the punch and holes the 154 leaves close in.

The 5.45x39mm is really good choice on the AR platform. I have an older S&W upper on a DPMS lower with an A1 fixed stock. Stupid accurate carbine that handles exceptionally well. I like the AR platform as it's controls are instinctive for me and it just feels right and balances just slightly muzzle heavy.

Enjoy it while the ammo is cheap.
Stock up on the unique magazines, and soap and elbow-grease when you stock up on ammo.
Unless you live in a desert, FULL cleaning is mandatory right after firing.
No waiting until its convenient to keep the rust away.

I would think a chrome lined barrel would be mostly mandatory. If they make chrome lined bolt and bolt carriers they would be beneficial as well.
For me, life is to short to clean up semi-autos shot with corrosive primers. I won't use the stuff in anything but bolt guns and even then, I usually shoot PPU through my M-N because it is more accurate anyway. For this reason, I don't ever see myself using 5.45.
I have not noticed that with mine but I will keep a watch on it. I do run a bore snake through mine when I get home with a little CLP on the snake but I have never shot corrosive ammo in the weapon. The corrosive stuff goes in the AK and SKS
Everything is getting expensive even the .22 federal value pack jumped 3 or 4 dollars around here.
