5.45x39 rifle?

There's the AN-94 Abakan, which operates on a principle so arcane that I won't even attempt to name it, much less explain it (it involves pulleys), but you can't get those here.

I'm pretty sure that the other new experimental Russian designs are chambered for the poison bullet as well.
 
just read up on that an 94... what a trip, 2 shot mode that can fire 2 bullets into the same hole, almost instantaneously at 100 yds, before the recoil hits you, via a floating bolt carrier, floating receiver, and cartridge feedway, that all moves via rails and pulleys, yet the mag is stationary. What a trip.

You said it. The AN-94 is weird; probably the most radical rifle to be adopted on a large scale.

The claims that it is more reliable than the AK-74 have got me scratching my head. There's no way that can be right.

I thought of another one; the East German police used a bolt action sniper rifle in 5.45x39.
 
There are a few East German bolt-action rifles floating around in 5.45x39. They are hard to find, but if you keep your eyes open they show up every so often.

The EG bolt guns dropped in price years ago because of the difficulty in finding ammo.

They're now very (too) expensive. I'd like one, but then a 50BMG chambered rifle would be nice too--and if they're the same price...

I didn't know the magpul would be offered in 5.45...dang it, I'll be needing one of those.
 
5.45x39 seems to be the ONLY bulk centerfire ammo that's still relatively inexpensive, and seems to have not taken the price hit as badly as other ammo.

Makes me happy I have a SAR2, but I agree it would be nice for some more non-AK options. I remember when Century was selling those 5.45 East German sniper/marksman's rifles. (The SGG, SSG?) it was neat looking and had a Zeiss or Hendsholt (well... the EG "Zeiss", or "Hendsholdt" anyway) scope, and sold for something like only $300 dollars. Nobody wanted them at the time, because only RWS made 5.45 ammo and it sold at oddball caliber commercial hunting ammo prices.

Nobody at the time foresaw the SAR2, other 5.45 AK 74 clones, or Krinkov kits making 5.45x39 modestly popular. So most people who bought them were probably collecting them as oddities at the time.

I think there were lots of problems with those bolt actions, the scopes had no click adjustments, just friction knobs making repeatable sight adjustments nearly impossible. There were problems with accuracy being around 4-6MOA with Russian ammo, 3-4MOA with EG ammo, 2MOA with Commercial 5.45 ammo. Although I remember reading someone (on Usenet? rec.guns maybe?) that trimmed .221 Fireball cases, loaded with overbore .224 bullets could get 1MOA, but you were fire-forming the cases, and there were feeding and extraction issues as the rim size wasn't quite right.

So for a "sniper", at least as the quality required by the needs of a military/police force, it was poor. And during/after reunification West Germany said "No way!"... It's probably just Internet rumor, but the rifles may also have been tainted by being used in "wall duty" to snipe escaping East Germans.
 
reading from a feb '98 shotgun news,paul scarlata tested the ssg 82 shoooting rws 59 gr. hollow points;fired a smallest group of 13/16 at 100 yards,and says he consistently grouped sub 2" at 200 yards,with a 13/8 best. said it was breezy,too. i guess another scope could be fitted,if you had the tools and skills at ferraris custom shop.
 
yeah,AJ, i have "heard" the rifles were used at the wall,and allegedly the scopes were designed to interlock with the next tower over.
 
There's a writeup on them in the latest issue of SWAT, and the author thinks they make no sense as a 'sniper' weapon for the wall/east-west border, but cannot come up with a counter-hypothesis as to their use.

They are, apparently, not that accurate and kinda clunky.

There is a really handy CZ rifle in 5.42x39. I believe it is the CZ 527.

No, there's no CZ rifle chambered in 5.45x39. You're thinking about the CZ 527 Carbine which is chambered in 7.62x39.
 
the ssg 82 was in those blonde stocks that are yellow/orange ,which does not seem very "sniperish",but also has no provision for a sling or bi-pod.
 
i think i know the answer,but would it be bubbazing an ssg82 to stain the stock,blacken the stipples,and put a sling and bipod on it?

I was just in a Gander Mountain in Johnstown and saw one. I don't remember if it was NEF or Rossi, but it was a single shot, break open action rifle that took the AK round. I was actually surprised to see it.
 
I know Vepr is chambered in 5.45x39, but it based on AK74.
And I think it is the best choice in this caliber.
