This  is a question for anyone who knows a lot about long range shooting I would like to buy a bolt action rifle that would be good to 500 yards it will be fitted with a scope at a latter time it must be either 308 or 3006 since I already have that caliber and I need to keep it under $1,000 idealy it should be available in left hand version. If you know a lot about this type of shooting tell what would be your choice within these parameters also what caliber of the 2 mentioned would be the best///thanks jim

I'm not 100% sure about the left handed part, but have you checked out the Savage line with the Accu-Trigger? I think that they come in left handed models and from what I hear they are accurate and have great out of the box triggers.

Also, you might look into Tikka. Great triggers. Wonderful barrels, and I think that they make a varmint/ heavy barrel model in 308 that is not too expensive.

Depending on what your goal is and the kind of shooting you are looking to do, the M1a and FAL are two semi-auto alternatives to consider. You mentioning that you will fit it with a scope at a later date, makes me think that you might be interested in iron sights for a while. Both of these rifles are very capable out to 500 yards, with iron sights.

The M1a is more than likely better suited for a Lefty, but the FAL is a little easier and less expensive to get a scope mount for. Quality FALs can be had for under 1000, and you can find M1as below 1000, if you are patient.

If your experience at shooting out to 500 yards is minimal, might I suggest that you consider an Appleseed shoot. They will instill the skills to be ablt to effectively use your new rifle out to 500 yards, very good marksmanship instruction, at a great price.http://www.rwva.org
