586 Queries

Hey guys, looking for some folks with a good memory here. Yeah I may be in trouble. Ran a search but just couldn't find the specific info I require.

I've got a guy calling me tomorrow with a quote on a 586 (no dash). I definitely want it bad enough. I've picked it up and seen it in person and it's not quite cherry, but it's real real nice. No box or papers, just this nice old gun.

He's a good guy I've done business with before, but what's a reasonable price? Ballpark wise of course.

Also, this model was called the Distinguised Combat Magnum correct? That's driving me crazy. I can't remember if the Distinguished Combat Magnum was the 686 or the 586.

Can anyone tell me the years the 586 no dash was made? I know they started in 1981. When was the advent of the 586-1? The reason I ask is I was born in 1981 and it would be cool (but not important) to have a gun as old as I am.

Also, what style grips did these have originally from the factory? Can you order replacement grips that are basically the same thing?

I love my 686-2 and my 629-4 and I CCW my 642-2 daily. I'm sure I'll love my 586. I've got first dibs on it. They're calling me tomorrow with the price and I get first crack at it if I tell them I want it.

I looked at one for 375 and would have bought it if it passed Jim March's tests, but the cylinder was too loose. That's probably near the upper price, not good, but acceptable. I ended up getting a 686 for 320 and the gun is rock solid, so I think that's a good price. I probably would have paid 400 for a rock solid 586 and been happy with it.

I will Sleeping Dog. I got to inspect it and put it in full lockup and all that. It's in fine operating condition and very nice cosmetic condition.

BOTH the 586 and the 686 were christened the Distinguished Combat Magnum.
The 581 and 681 were both christened the Distinguished Service Magnum.


The original Combat Magnum was the Model 19, followed by the Model 66.
Just as the Model 15 (and Model 65) were the Combat Masterpiece.

At 300 you got a bargain! I just picked up a sweetie of a 686 for 300 even as well, but given the choice I'll almost always choose a blued gun, like the 586, over a stainless one.

Yeah it was pretty fair. The blue is gone in two spots. I intend to get a pair of wooden grips for it and see what I can do to fix the blue sometime. I just love how much it contrasts with my 686 even though it's the same gun really.

I posted in another thread that back when was a punk I almost passed on a 686-1 for $175. Well I came to my senses and the 686 is now one of my favorites. I picked up a 27-2 last week and can't wait to put some rounds down range.
