Do any of you own or have knowledge of the Remington models 591 and 592 5mm rimfire rifles? I have been looking to find out the difference in velocity and penetration versus the .204. Any help is appreciated.
Maybe a pic or two
Thanks

The 1971 Shooter's Bible puts MV of a 38 grain hollow point at 2100 FPS with the 5mm RF.
A 32 grain projectile in .204 Ruger is listed at 4225 FPS according to Chuck Hawks.

The Remington 5mm magnum was intended to compete with the Winchester .22magnum. I guess it looked promising for a bit, but just didn't take off. Guns were discontinued, ammo is scarce and expensive.

Some guys have converted the rimfire rifles to centerfire and obtained brass to reload and keep the obsolete Remingtons running. I think it would be better to just buy a used .22 magnum rifle and put the Remington rifles up.

Unless you luck onto some 5mm ammo in quanity, I wouldn't buy a 5mm Remington rifle. Although I guess occasionaly some 5mm ammo gets produced, I have not heard of any available for some time.

I used a friend's for years when they came out. A very snappy round indeed.

I'm trying to remember.... Didn't Remington pull a "SONY Beta" stunt and shoot themselves in the foot so to speak in having a lock on the market for the rifles and ammo???

Yes, about impossible to find ammunition.

I do a bit of gunsmithing, have had a couple guys ask about converting the rifles to .22 magnum. Don't think it's a feasable conversion. Remingtons a fatter case. Only option besides finding rare ammo, is the centerfire conversion. Some company offers a bolt conversion, and 5mm centerfire brass can be had, then you just load your own 5mm ammo.

I have no idea how well it works. Thats just the only option I know for keeping the rifles running.

I have one for sale.

Very clean 592 and 25 precious rounds of ammo for $250.

That is a cheap Bushnell Banner 4X on it. But, it was a gift from my Pop years ago and it and the rings are not included.

Fella's;

I owned a 591, sweated blood to buy it. That was when I was literally a poor, near-as-dammit-starving, college student. Only a year or so later, Remington quit making the guns & not too long after that, ceased production of the ammo too. I have never forgiven Remington for that.

I have never heard of any more 5mm magnum ammo being made beyond the original Remington production run. I sincerely doubt any more will ever be made.

I loved that gun, and the way it performed. But, seeing the writing on the wall (Hell, it was hard to miss, being in flames 10 feet tall!) I sold it & made money doing so. I've always felt that if Remington had marketed the concept correctly, the .17HMR would not exist today.

I've not purchased a .17HMR either, once bitten & all that. Frankly, with the guns I now have, any of the sub-.22's answer a question I've never asked. The 5mm will always have a collector's value though.

I wanted a 5mm too. Fortunately, we were poor, and I got a .22 rifle instead.

I thought the same thing about the 17HMR, but seems as if it will probably be ok.

I think they have produced 5mm rimfire ammo at least once in a special run. Didn't last long. Or maybe that was the old Winchester .22 round I'm thinking of? Nah, I think they did produce some 5mm back in the 1990's, but don't hold me to that!

You'll be better off getting a .17 hmr or .17 mach2. They'll do everything the old 5mm did but you can get ammo!!
