Starrett?

My boss just bought (last summer) a set of Starrett 6" digital calipers. Was he shocked when he found the "MADE IN CHINA" sticker on them! :cuss:

Ya, we were shocked. :barf: What I didn't say was that he sent them back. I remember a friend of mine sprung for Starrett dial dalipers (USA) about 15 years ago. What a Cadallic set of calipers. Most my tools are Starrett but I do have 6" and 12" Mitutoyo calipers. I'm kinda hard on calipers (I use them in place of a 6" scale) having had balls of chips grab grab them of the top of the lathe and toss them across the shop and such. They still work which says something for their quality. I'm not so sure the $15 China ones would hold up so well.

I have Starrets and the Harbor freight ones and I had rebuilt a BBC racing engine with the HF ones and it is still together. But Like any use of an measuring insturment I Check the calibrations before using them with a standard ( feeler gauges or wire standards) I ruined a starett by dropping it on the floor (out 120 bucks) :banghead: so I wouldn't feel so bad by dropping this and breaking it ( I bought 4 of them for reserves)

I have a set of HF electronic calipers I had for about 3 years, and I just tested it with a 1" standard, after zeroing it in, a it measured out to 1.000 !
Most people don't know is that RBCS, Starret's Dial Calipers, Fowler, and others are Chinese made, I think by the same company. They just put their name on it, and mark it up big time. I hate when American companies do that, I think it is ruining there good name, and defrauding the consumer that doesn't know they are buying fake American products.
If you are going to buy Chinese products, buy it with their own label, and buy it cheap......
At least HF is doing that, though some of their products are bad, I had a plastic deburring tool from them that broke in 3 days. Bought a good Aluminum one, it it will last a lifetime.

beware of items that say made in canada too. they are importing chinese componets and assembling them then smacking label saying made in canada. found this out recently with craftsman workbench
