Let me first start by saying that my only experience with revolvers was my Uncles old service revolver that my Dad and I shot once a year, for about 12 shots (6 for him, 6 for me). It was a "neat thing", then we put it away.

I grew up (for pistols) on semis- Makarov, Llama, etc. I decided that I wanted a pocket gun, and the PPk/S was too heavy. I wanted something light. Yes, there was the 3AT and the PM9, both nice, but they didn't "do it for me". Then I say a Model 37, which went to a 442, then I decided (thanks to A LOT of research on THR) on the 642 for my "been dry for a year" reward/ pocket gun. I have had it for a bit, but due to a death in the family, shot it today for the first time. One word- "WOW".

It did this really wierd thing- it went bang EVERY TIME I PULLED THE TRIGGER. Wow. What a change. My P22 is about 99%, the PPK/S about 80%. I only shot about 60 rounds or so, but they all went bang.

I was at about 15 yards, consistently hit the target, consistenly a bit on the high side, but if I'm aiming for the torso, and hit the face of a BG, so be it.

It is definately not a target gun, but I probably could have put a nother 60 -100 rounds though it before I got too tired. I have been putting in my pocket in an Uncle Mike's pocket holster, and it dissapears.

Shot range bullets, Glaser Silvers (only 2, not much difference) and some +p. bit of a difference between the 2!

Shhhhh! We're trying to keep that secret, eh?

Sorry, man. I haven't gotten the "wheel gun" rule book yet!

Is it normal that after such an experience to think out getting rid of all semi's? Except the p22 which is the most fun you can have with your clothes on? I mean PPK/s vs another wheel gun? ouch. My head hurts...

The 642 straight up rocks.

The day I get rid of my 642 is the day I stop carrying. I wear mine in a Milt-Sparks pocket holster which allows it to dissapear in my front pocket no matter what kind of pants or short I'm wearing.

Flip.

The 642 is an great little carry gun. I load mine up with 125 gr Silver Tips . It ain't no tagret gun but it's a neat little shooter.

I picked up some 135 gr Gold Dots yesterday. I haven't got to the range to try them out yet but hopefully i'll get a chance to try 'em out next week.

Remember: bullet weight will affect point of impact.

Go score some 158grain 38+P lead hollowpoints, either Winchester or Remington. These are a *classic* "snubbie special" defense load and probably what the gun was "regulated" for in the first place.

They're not flashy but they're cheap as effective self defense ammo goes and they work. They're a GREAT option out of a steel snubbie like yours.

There are times when i seriously consider restricting all future purposes to wheelguns. I've even seriously considered selling all of my centerfire autos to fund more. I have resisted this urge due to a long term policy of NEVER selling guns at all. But, i think its a normal thing when exposed to the purity of a revolver to want nothing else, at least for awhile.

I'm not the only one!

I was starting to think that I needed therapy because all I have taken to the range for the last 6 months are wheelguns. The P229 has been relegated to briefcase duty while the models 520, 19, and the Colt Python have been range regulars.

Even my wife, who lusted for her P239 for years (we could not afford one at the time), has shot her model 36 almost exclusively for months. Don't know why it is, but I like it!! Although I almost have to beg her to let me shoot it. I guess life could be worse.:p

642 is a fine pistol which I really like for its snag free design! Ditto on trying several different loads to change point of impact. The heavier the bullet the higher the point of impact. If you are already shooting high with 158 grain loads you may wish to try some 110 or 125 grain loads.

going back to what c_yeager said,

the only semi auto of any substancial caliber that I own is a Glock-26. Although it is a fine pistol for CCW or even range use, it is my most neglected pistol. Hell, I don't even have a holster for it and can't wait for my holster to come in for my 2.5in M66. I just love my three revos.

When the Evil Empress was pregnant I purchased a 642. During childbirth classes it was far more discreet for rolling around on the floor and telling her to pant like a puppy. And the during childbirth proper it did'nt pull my scrub pants down to my ankles when clipped to the waistband like my Government Model would.

I love carrying it, hate shooting it;)

Revolvers in general are far, far, far under-rated. There are many days running trainings when I pine for the good old days, like 1985, when Model 10s and if you were a real stud or studette, Model 66s ruled, before that weenie Sonny Crockett convinced everyone they should carry an auto.

Anyone have ideas on a more sweat-resistant , tougher finish than the current 642 finish? Estimates of cost also appreciated (for the refinishing).

Shadowman,

What kind of problems did you have with the finish (and how much carrying did it take to get them)? I just got a 637, which is just the exposed hammer version of the 642. Sweat resistance was part of why I got that particular model since I'm using it as a summer carry piece. I'd hate to find out that it doesn't deal well with sweat.

pm sent.

For those that have 642, are there any tricks/tips to keeping the finish nice and new-looking?

Hello all,

In the not so distant future, I'm sending my 642 to http://trippresearch.com/ to have it hard chromed. I love my 642, it fits the pocket pistol nich perfectly but I don't want to have to worry about the coating issues. Once hard chromed, it should be pretty much impervious to normal exposure (sweat / rain / etc..) The cost is only $150. I'll let you know how it turns out ;)
