Hey BR

Check out Thomas.

The amendments are up.

Ted Kennedy has a bunch proposed.

Chuck Schumer has a few too.

Does it make anyone else nervous when they see "Purpose will be available when amendment is proposed for consideration." under the description of the amendments, especially those proposed by our gungrabber fiends?

Excuse the cross post, but this is my thought for the day.

What's germane for S. 397?

The bill is legal reform. If an amendment is gun control, pro or con, it's not germane. Best not to open Pandora's box. Many would like to, but don't go there. We're just as bad as the other side in reacting to "did somebody say "gun"?!!

Gun control should never coexist with something good so that it can then be singled out as the unconstitutional abomination that it is.

Congress demonstrates why it is dysfunctional when it can't ever pass a "clean" bill. Voting for passage should mean endorsement and accountability for any and all provisions...no excuses, no cop outs, no compromises. Without the BS they have plenty of time to process narrowly defined bills. There must be some method of doing this while complying with the rules. The whining is when chicanery is not allowed. I guess it would be really boring without all the gaming.

The other interesting aspect is how the underlying bill is strongly bipartisan, but the amendments are bitterly partisan.

I should be able to keep a running account for all but 12-2 something EST today, for those without a TV or broad band.

Kennedy just layed the golden egg for today. He is demanding consideration of ALL Amendments, or those Dems supporting the entire Bill is in jeapordy

Kennedy is already up complaining about the leadership controlling which amendments are considered. Boo hoo. :neener:

Kennedy is saying S.397 has poorly defined exemptions from immunity for cases of negligence. Says NRA wants gun dealers and mfgs to be protected from lawsuits, that it demands the Senate remove the last avenue of recourse for victims. Bill does not help LE fight crime, does not meet need to strengthen gun control laws, does not effect ability of citizens to legally own guns, nothing to do with 2nd amd. Quotes LaPierre saying it expects total support for 397, or else. Complains about AWB expiring. Recalls the NRA instructing 397 to be killed because of AWB, calls it a disgraceful spectacle. (Makin me love the NRA, Teddy). Complains that mfgs are free to design and market these items with no health/safety overview.

Kennedy says there are reckless dealers selling guns without background checks, because it caved into the NRA. Talks about terrorist manual found instructing on how to purchase guns in USA. They are told gun victims need no recourse. At NRA direction inspection of FFL were limited to once a year. Says financial institutions, meat packers, etc can be inspected whenever. Talks about DC sniper case, says this is how a dealer can get away with losing hundreds of weapons. Victims had only courts to turn to for recourse. Gun mfgs want to sell more guns, laws are designed by NRA to sell more guns, even if it's to criminals. Congress cut funding to ATF, that it is so under funded that it would take 22 years to inspect all dealers. Has amendment that says anybody selling guns to foreign terrorist org will be unprotected by 397. Says terrorists can now buy assault weapons thanks to NRA. Complains about background checks being destroyed in 24 hours.

Kennedy repeating the same stuff you've heard the past two days but with that certain "Is he drunk?" ranting style that only Kennedy can deliver...much more entertaining despite being about the 20th time they've recycled these stories.

Kennedy is up, eh?

Guess I'm not all that bummed that cspan has not yet started its internet stream of the proceedings, then.

Kennedy says Ashcroft prevented investigations of 9/11 hijackers gun purchase history. Says we're too worried about their privacy rights and RKBA. Says something is rotten, that instead of addressing real issues of community safety, we're appeasing special NRA interests and giving protections to terrorists with S.397. Bill gives greater protection to gun industry than medical industry. Denied victims their day in court. Bill supporters misrepresent the lawsuits, that they aren't designed to bankrupt industry. If bill had been law last year, victims of DC snipers wouldn't have been able to seek claims on Bullseye. Talks about bystander who was shot with gun that was stolen from plant. Says this case should not be dismissed. Talks about 14 year old killed when playing with a gun with friends. Says dealer and supplier who sold gun should be held responsible. S.397 is not about protecting industry from bankruptcy, it's protection to dealers who supply to criminals and terrorists, enough is enough. Say no to shameful bill.

Another Dem being theatrical about how Defense bill was put on hold for this special interest legislation. Kennedy doing another drama bit about he is so concerned with armoring Humvees. Talking about other bills that are higher priority to him. It's like watching a bad middle school drama play...

The stream is up...

I keep getting "this stream is not available..."

cspan2...right?

EDIT: Got it now..switched to Windows Media Player...its Teddy! Ah! AH! My eyes! My Eyes!

Durbin saying the Army Times ran headline story that they pushed off Defense bill for S.397, for a special interest group. Repubs have made it clear that they think NRA is more important. Kennedy is agreeing that no other industry has this protection. More talk about how important Defense bill is to veterans, etc. Carefully crafted back and forth to try to make Repubs look bad to vets and milpers.
