798 Remington

Hello everyone. I have been searching the forums regarding the Remington 798 and was wondering what people think. I know they are not made in America, but are these guns of decent quality? Will I experience any issues with it? My local gun shop had one for 399, down from 550 - 600 I believe.

Discontinued, as a Remington.

It's a Zastava (Yugo) Mauser barreled action in a US laminate stock.

I don't have experience with them, though I've handled them. I can't speak for accuracy, etc.

As I have been reading, it seems to me that people are more unhappy with Remington as a whole for pricing the gun high, and getting the Zastava contract (instead of charles daly) than they are with the actually quality of the gun. Everyone knows a mauser is a solid performer, but aside from that I am wondering if there are any issues. ArmedBear, thanks for your help. I appreciate your response. =)

Same here, they seem to be pretty well made, and is certainly a good action, but they are a little rough. What is the chambering?

They are good. we sold several while Remington had them and no real serious complaints, best I can remember.
some of the guys said they shot very well as to accuracy.

It is chambered in .308. I actually went to pick up my .30-06 today and saw the rifle. The guy at the store told me that they were a solid rifle (but I like to confirm these things with people that have no horse in the race.) It seems that in most of the posts I've read, people painted a negative picture of them, but not one has been performace based.

The Zastava's are descent, it was for a time, the Howa's that were turds.

Thanks Mike. I think I may go back tomorrow and look at it a bit closer. Is the action pretty much the same as the reliable mauser of old?

Seems like a fair price, even for a standard length chambering; I think it is a safe purchase. The nearest comparable rifles are the Ruger M-77 and Winchester M-70, both will cost you quite a bit more.

Can you tell me how they compare to the weatherby vanguard? Those are also priced at 399

Personally I would take the Mauser over the Vanguard, but I can't say it is a bad gun either.

I have a 798 in .375 H&H, and my Brother in law has one in .270. Both have been solid performers. The actions are a bit rough from the box, but smooth up nicely with repeated cycling. I put tape on my bolt handle (to prevent blue wear) and cycled the action a few hundred times. It definitely smoothed up. Some guys use lapping compound also. It is hard to go wrong with a Mauser.

I have two new unfired Interarms Mark X's made by the same outfit that made the Charles Daly and Remington 798. They seemed to have left a lot of finish work undone on both of the later production actions. The Mark X is a finer made rifle than either the Charles Daly or the Remington 798. My Mark X's are both slightly over 20 years old and unfired. OH WELL!!!! someday, I guess.
