870 Forend / Side Saddle

I would like to replace my standard express forend with something shorter so I can use a Tac Star 6 round side saddle. I found one made by Speedfeed and it says "Law Enforcement Forend" on it. Is this one shorter than the express that I have now? What all is involved in putting my side saddle on? I don't have it yet so that's why I'm asking.

Ok I have my information on the forend. I looked into it further and it basically says it will not come in contact with the reciever or shell holders. What about installing the Tac Star 6 shell holder on the reciever?

The tac star involves drifting out the two trigger group pins and replacing them with the screws supplied with the side saddle kit.

Blue locktite is your friend.

I ordered the 4 round side-saddle and kept the stock forend, I like the longer gripping surface. When you install the side-saddle make sure you don't tighten it too tight or the action might bind.

I cut down the wood at the back of the fore end. No big job, even for an all thumbs guy like myself. You might have to use a longer screw or superglue on the sidesaddle. They tend to shoot loose.

One consideration, however minimal, is that cutting down the stock forend can reduce the "book" resale value even if the perceived value increases in the eyes of many. Not that any of you are lookin' to sell those sweethearts...just a consideration if you ever "needed" to (e.g. medical bills, family emergency, etc.)

I tried the speed forend, it required a lot of work to make it fit. Tight fit on install, no biggie. But I couldn't get the action to close, there was too much material on the inside forend and it would jam up between the barrel and magazine tube. Replaced it with a Hogue forend.
It would probably be cheaper to buy a extra forend on ebay and trim to fit.
