870 stock too long?

I was wondering if you guys could help.

I've owned this (synthetic) 870 for a few years but i've never really been into shotgunning until now. And it has come to attention that the length of the stock on my 870 is too long for my midgety body. The problem is, I don't know how to measure length of pull, so I don't know how to put it in numerical form. Do you measure from the trigger to the end of the butt, or just the whole stock itself

I was looking at this Choate stock with a 12" length of pull, 'for youngsters'. Now I am 19 but still, i'm stubby. But is 12" TOO short?

Finally, if I do decide to get another stock, what brands should I look at? All I know is that Choate is good and Advanced Technologies is bad (i've bought two stocks from them already and I hated each one).

If you like scary black guns, I would suggest you get a Hogue Overmolded "short" stock . The quality of these is far above other synthetics, especially factory stuff.

Remington makes an OEM "youth" model stock. They are often found on eBay. Good luck!
