Stoeger Cougar 8000
Double Tap 147 gr. GDHP 9mm+P

The +P offerings will offer higher velocity for better hollow point expansion. Federal HSTs are great rounds, I would go for the 147s, but the difference is small.

+P NYPD, or standard pressure, Earl2?

I ask because I can get a deal on the standard pressure loading.

Federal HST 124 gr +P in my S&W MP9FS, and either Federal Hydra-Shok 124 gr or Hornady Critical Defense 115 gr (both standard pressure) in my PT-709.

I am a proponant of the speer gold dot 124gr +p and a huge fan of Double Tap's 9mm+p ammo using the same gold dot bullet. Standard pressure rounds with any quality self defense round will work in most situations. Drywall and light interior doors are no match for a standard pressure modern self defense 9mm loading from any of the major manufacturers, however if you are going to attempt to pass barrier tests such as automotive glass windshields and sheet metal door skins, you will want and need a +p loading. As far as recoil, Federal loads and Hornady loads feel about like shooting winchester white box from walmart. I have fired a number of Federal Hydrashok 124g +p+ rounds from my glock 17 and they feel just like the white box junk. 9mm in any loading is very tame, especially in a larger service pistol like a 17. I don't like the hornady critical defense, I tried some, and it just doesn't have enough charge behind it to penetrate in a "professional manner". If you want something that will really scream and knock some stuff down in 9mm go with any of Double Tap's loadings or try a corbon Powerball, the place where hornady got the critical defense idea from only corbon puts a good charge behind it.

Personally I carry the Federal 9BPLE 115gr +P+....

However don't get too caught up in the "I carry ++P++ Explosive Tipped Super Killers Ammo".

The Federal HST you are carrying is a good round. If it shoots well and feeds well in your weapon I see no reason for you to change.

Just about any bullet will do the job provided you do yours. Shot placement is the key. Super duper bullets are way overrated.

One of the few enhanced ammos I've shot is the Powerball series. They shoot extremely well and are 'supposed' to be designed for better, easier expansion. My only real concern is that they load and fire well.

I carry the HST in 124gr +P in both my G17 and G26. I am going to try the HST in 147gr., as well as the Winchester Bonded PDX1 in 147 gr. (winter is coming) whenever some is available.

HST 124-grain +P. I see it is a popular choice.

Sig 226, XD9 Tactical, and XD9 SC.

Actually, I think a few of my backup mags contain Gold-Dot 115-grainers because I have some of those left. After they sit in the mags for a few months, they get used at the range. They're both top-quality IMO, but I want to standardize on the HST.

I would use what is most accurate in your gun. Gold Dot seems to shoot well in a variety of 9 mms. Not a +P fan you really don't get a lot for it. My attitude is if I felt i needed a +P 9mm I'd get a 357 SIG.

hmm, I think +p is very worth it.

my gold dot 147 grain +P loads do 1135 fps, vs about 920 in the standard pressure gold dots

thats a pretty decent markup there.

My personal opinion FWIW is that the best ammo you can get for self defense carry in the 9mm is what is and has been carried by law enforcement and its civilian counterpart in "personal defense" ammo. While +p and +p+ is somewhat better than standard velocity I don't think its anything to be loosing sleep over as even the old standard JHP's did a more than fair job under many conditions.

I picked up a couple boxes of HST standard velocity 124gr police surplus to join others in my small stockpile of Ranger SXT's, Gold Dots, Starfire's, Hydrashoks, 115gr +P+ Federals, Golden Sabers to name some as I've picked up a couple boxes when I've seen them on sale. I shoot reloads most of the time so the good stuff doesn't get used much.

Right now my Glock 19 9mm carry gun is loaded with Ranger Partition Gold (std vel) and the Beretta 92 has Ranger SXT +P+ T's. Not that they're necessarily the "best" or the "baddest" but just the flavor of the moment.

Standard pressure. The P7 can handle a little hotter stuff but I am not going to use 124 gr and +p.
