WHOO-HOO!!! I think I have finally achieved a breakthrough moment in conveying the importance of having more than one sidearm and more than one holster to the wife. She is pro-RKBA and would not dream of not having a gun in the house. But she did find my extensive collection a bit hard to understand. I think it may have been the rifle rack/shoe rack combo in the closet that pushed her over the edge. Might also have been the polished brass for reloadin' mixed in with her nail polishes. Or it could have been the speedloaders left on her perfume spray. I don't think she minded the Guns & Ammo and American Rifleman mixed in with Cosmopolitan and Glamour for coffee table reading.

Anyway, over the past year I have been (GASP) selling off pieces of the collection to cover expenses related to keeping a roof over our head, cars paid, food on the table, etc. that stemmed from two job layoffs (me) and three job layoffs ( hers). While I miss a lot of the guns sold, I would miss my house, car, and food more. In August, I finally landed at a stable firm and am due now for a promotion in the next 2 months or so with a relocation paid for by the company.

At this point, I am down to zero rifles, zero shotguns, and three handguns. At the height of my collecting, I had over 100 weapons. As of late, she has been making noises and inquiries about my "lack of collection" and her concern that I am going to begin going on an acquisition binge once we move. She made the unbelievable remark.. "Why do you need more than one gun and holster?"

I immediately thought of her wardrobe. I pointed out that she had a winter and a summer wardrobe. I SHOULD have a winter and a summer gun. She perked her head to the side, thought about it, and agreed. She actually said that she could see me in golf shorts with that 4-inch L-frame in my waistband and thought it looked like I had a tumor growing out of right side. She said that my snubby would be a better fashion statement. SCORE ONE FOR THE HOME TEAM!!!

She had also commented negatively on carrying more than one gun or carrying a gun with a knife. I mentioned that she carried more than one lipstick, one nail color, and more than one fragrance in her purse. I asked her why. She responded that in case someone doesn't like the first one, or if she was going to multiple social events, she'd want to change. She said that some strong fragrances do not have a place in a business meeting, but are good for dates (with me). I pointed out the same thought with a folding Buck knife and a handgun. She connected the dots there as well. SCORE TWO!!!

She had also complained about my planning on ordering multiple holsters, belts, and speedloader pouches (brown and black). This one was an easy win. I told her that she would never wear a pair of black shoes and a carry a light brown purse or vice versa. She looked at me like I had three eyes! I'd look like a total idiot if I had black shoes and carried a light brown purse, she wailed. I have to accessorize. BINGO!!! I was able to get agreement that I need a compelete rig in black and brown for each of the revolvers. SCORE TRHEE FOR THE HOME TEAM!!!

Her biggest complaint was about my wanting to get some custom work done on my revolvers. Why would by a gun and get it chopped and tinkered with? I asked her why she needed to buy the business suit sets and have them tailored? I asked her why her evebning gowns that she wore had to be tailored. The lights went off and she understood. The clothes came off the rack pre-packaged and needed to be "fit to the person." HOME RUN FOR THE HOME TEAM!!!

So, it all has ended well. Who says that men and women are from different planets and that we cannot understand each other. I'd like to think that I have done my part to make peace in the battle of the sexes.

BTW, those holster rig orders will be going out shortly. And those revolvers will be getting shipped into Cylinder & Slide for some nice customizing. Now on to trying to justify a rifle and a shotgun.

With 3 handguns did you keep?
Why would you send your keepers to C&S?
And after your experience, which rifle and shotgun will you buy?

Gordy's Questions

I kept the following:

Taurus M-627 Tracker 4-inch 357/7
Taurus M-617CH2 2-inch 357/7 with bobbed hammer, DAO
Colt M-1911A1 (was Grandfathers, then Father,s now mine)

I want to send the Tauri to C&S for trigger jobs, moonclip mods, and to chop the 4-inch ported bbl down to 3-inch UN-ported on the Tracker for the ideal CCW revolver. Replace rubber grips with some nice wood grips. I've been searching for a stainless 7-shot 3-inch 357 for almost a year with ZERO luck. So I figured I'd have someone make me one!

In terms of shotgun and long-arm. It will depend on where I am transferred to. I'm leaning heavily towards a Remington 11-87 semi-auto 12gg with rifle sights. The long-arm would likely be a semi-auto .308 if I was out West. If I am in the East, I'd probably go for a lever-action carbine by Marlin in 357/38 and scope it.

Some good arguments. If I ever get enough money to buy more guns I'll have to use some of them. Sounds like you're getting transferred out of MD so you'll be able to acquire some more handguns. Fewer to choose from since January 1st.

Best of luck!

Good job. :)

Now, to finish it up and let you collect as much as you want: point out that you enjoy collecting guns, just as she enjoys collecting (whatever) or just as she enjoys shopping for new outfits. But it wasn't selling her outfits that got you through the lean times -- it was the equity you had stored up in your firearms collection.

Pax -- working out the details on the expanding gun collection tenent of the argument. I think it can be successfully linked to her need for more jewelry despite having earrings, necklaces, rings, etc.

And yes, the "equity" in that sizeable collection, plus the reloading dies, brass, pre-ban mags, etc. was what helped pull us through a tough time.
