a firing position you've never seen before

I assume the marksmans tried and rejected the use of rock piles, tree stumps, forked sticks etc for some reason.

I'm also surprised this photo was made public as enemies of the UK will now begin developing counter-sniper weapons accurate not to MOA, but MOH (Minute of Heine).

Perhaps we are all wrong. This could be explained if he was simply frightened by the boom-stick.

It looks like the original picture isn't appearing--the only pic I see on this thread is Geek's captioned version.

It looks like the bolt is all the way back (whatever you call it--not in battery, ready to fire), but the shooter has his finger on the trigger and is looking through the scope.

I also wonder--does anyone know any details about why Accuracy Int'l went out of business?

I told you about cuts off in the Army budget, we need the bench rest back, Its killing me man.

Hahaha!

I love the poor guy's haunted look as if he really can't believe he's doing what he's doing.

:D

I've shot off a buttpack before, but not an actual butt...so what's your shot if you're the countersniper, scope shot or o-ring?:p

Thanks max! That picture and a lot of the responses to it gave me the best laugh I've had in a long time. :D

My wife came into the room and asked "what the heck are you laughing at?"

It's hard to tell from the picture, but it looks like the soldier acting as the "rest" is saying something like, "somebody grab that damn camera!" :)

That lends a whole new definition to "the crack of a rifle." :D

The rifle is the British-issue L96A1, made by Accuracy International. It is essentially the same as the "AW" Arctic Warfare model. 308, 26" barrel, S&B scope.

re: the funny-looking position. The femur is probably a more stable platform than the back, since the former is not compressible and doesn't move from breathing like the torso.

I'm trying to put myself into an enemy's position, looking out, and seeing a rifle barrel aimed towars me over a pair of buttocks, similarly aimed . . . :what:

I know that ranges used to be referred to as "shooting butts", but this is ridiculous! :D

Position

Looks like a pretty damn good expedient field position to me. The rest has his head positioned to support the shooter's elbow...His body is relaxed and fully supported. Sniper teams will do whatever is necessary to make the shot count...and often come up with improvised rests that most wouldn't even think of.

Rembrandt:

a. Who was the photographer?
b. Who was the model? (Looks like a gymnast or dancer of some sort, from her extension and build)
c. Is there a gallery somewhere?

I think they've upgraded to the Asscrack International "BVD" model.

I'm pretty sure that these guys are tired of being the butt of all these jokes. We've been riding them pretty hard since the crack of dawn - it's got to be hard for them to just keep turning the other cheek to this sort of abuse.

And I didn't even get to the part where they had to swallow their pride in the name of God and Country.

You know, if the "bench" were wearing a kilt, this could be the kind of PSYOPS we saw with William Wallace and the Battle of Stirling. Hmm...

I recently saw a sniper documentary on either Discovery or History featuring Royal Marines with Accuracy International rifles which I believe were chambered in .338 Lapua.
